new looks for a new year

Did you make New Year’s resolutions this year? I did, and I’ll tell you a secret: I always make mine very easy to achieve. Last year I had a really good one: to spend loose change. You laugh, but I got so tired of seeing the big ugly jug of unpocketed change in my hall closet that I made a habit of paying for anything that was less than five bucks (a cup of coffee, a birthday card) with change. And I didn’t peter out on this resolution by February. I stuck with it all year, and that felt pretty good. Little goal, big success! For 2018 one of my decorating goals/resolutions is to treat my rooms to a star accessory more often. You know how a cool piece of jewelry…

These days she splits her time between the Steel City and Los Angeles. Big bro Steve, who has years of construction experience, brings Leanne’s unconventional plans to life, whether that means building a doorframe to fit an old door she found or exposing the joists and ductwork on a ceiling for character. “Even if Steve says no to one of my ideas at first, he always figures out how to make it work,” says Leanne. “I get about 4% of the design input,” says Steve, laughing. what the show is about Cameras follow the Fords as they update quirky older homes all…

wow! what color is that?

quartz blush BY HGTV HOME BY SHERWIN-WILLIAMS “I originally painted this vanity black, which ended up feeling boring. Because it’s my guest bathroom, I figured it should be more fun. Blush gives the room a nice kick, but since it’s a neutral, it goes well with any hardware finish.”—Elsie Larson, A Beautiful Mess, Nashville, TN midday BY SHERWIN-WILLIAMS “There’s nothing babyish about the sunflower hue in this nursery. It looks bright and happy with the pinks, reds, and purples. And it can stick around for years: Take out the crib and toys and it works for a teen.”—Gideon Mendelson, Mendelson Group, New York, NY blue springs BY BENJAMIN MOORE “If you love white walls but want to branch out, look no further than this versatile blue gray. It’s subtle but leans a bit more blue in a room…

make it modern

old bench, modern living room Playful pillows and a faux-fur throw take the stuffiness out of a French-style wood bench with a red velvet seat. Set against mod triangle-pattern wallpaper and beneath a gallery wall of fun, colorful prints, old-school seating suddenly looks very now. old lamp, modern entry A cut glass lamp loses its fussy vibe thanks to a new black drum shade (cool detail: The inside is gold!). Paired with an industrial burnished-metal chair, large-scale abstract art, and a sleek green dresser, the once froufrou light is ready to shine like it’s 2018. old pottery, modern bookcase Classic chinoiserie vases and jars get a hip upgrade on shelves backed with graphic pink-and-white wallpaper.
