it’s raining new ideas around here!

This time of year—every year—I’m ready for new. I’m sick and tired of my winter wardrobe, and I fantasize about kicking all my furniture to the curb and starting from scratch. But eventually I get my head out of the clouds and think realistically. How can I have more new in my life—and around my house—without going back to square one? Paint is always a good idea. And this month we’re introducing a new column, Paint Academy, which takes you through a painting project step-by-step, starting with one of our favorites: painting your front door a new color. We’re also showcasing no-reno-required ways to make over your bathroom on your own, because (brace yourself) 50% of bath remodels done by pros cost $20,000 or more. We’re much more interested in finding…

dear magazine,

I’ve always had quiet colors in my house, but a dining room in last April’s “Wow! What Color Is That?” convinced me to try a bright coral (Wet Coral by Olympic) in my bedroom. I’ve officially broken out of my color comfort zone, and I love it when friends ask, “What color is that?” —Susan Raia, Leland, NC I can always count on HGTV Magazine to deliver refreshing ideas for around the house. In the January/February issue, the Front Door of the Month [“Come On In!”] inspired me to paint the front door of my coastal cottage a similar shade of seafoam green. I’m so happy with how it turned out. Mona Sikes, Midway, GA If I don’t read your magazine the day it arrives in the mail (usually in one sitting), I’ll read it when I…

tell us your laundry habits

eader poll esults! Do you separate whites and colors? 82% Yes 18% No THE EXPERT SAYS Congratulations! Most of you are following the most basic rule of modern laundry. Mixing whites and colors can result in dark dyes bleeding onto whites, turning them dull gray or pink. “It can take just one wash or happen over time, especially if you use warm or hot water,” says Mary Gagliardi, Clorox’s “Dr. Laundry.” If you’re unsure how to wash a mixed-color garment, such as a white shirt with dark stripes, test it by dipping a corner of the hem that includes the color into warm water with detergent. If the color bleeds, wash the item in cold water by itself until no more color comes off, then add it to your colors rotation. Do you use…

paint academy paint your front door

1 Remove the house numbers, mail slot, and knocker from the door. You can leave the handleset on. 2 Open the door and clean it with phosphatefree TSP following the package instructions. 3 Sand the front and the side edge that has hinges, then wipe clean with a tack cloth. 4 Tape off the handleset, weather stripping, and hinges with painter’s tape. 5 With the door still open, prime the front and the side edge that has hinges using latex primer for outdoor use. (If your door is in good shape and you’ll be painting over a light color, you can skip priming it.) Let dry according to the primer’s instructions. 6 With a small angled brush, paint the panels and around the handleset. Use a large flat-edge brush to paint the rest of the…
