dear hgtv magazine

My April issue recently arrived, and I am thrilled that you featured Chip and Joanna Gaines [“A Day in the Life of the Fixer Uppers”]. They are my favorite HGTV constructionand-design duo! I don’t think I’ve ever missed an episode of Fixer Upper. If only I lived in Waco, TX, they could renovate and decorate a home for me.—Joyce Pottinger, Roseville, CAThanks to Jonathan Scott’s tip to keep Goof Off on hand in the November feature “Handymen’s Secret Supplies,” I was finally able to remove some glue I’d spilled on my sewing machine. The sticky residue wiped right off, and now it looks good as new.—A.C. Dougherty, Pittsburgh, PAI look forward to HGTV Magazine every month, and I almost always turn to “Copy the Curb Appeal” first. One of these…

my favorite pair of jeans

My bathroom walls: Antelope Tan by GliddenMy bedroom walls: Naples Yellow by Sherwin-WilliamsMy front door: Blazer by Farrow & BallMy den walls: Van Deusen Blue by Benjamin MooreMy living room walls: Slipper Satin by Farrow & BallMy dining room console table: Gable Violet by Ralph Lauren Painti readily admit that I don’t like to hire anyone to paint for me. I’d much rather gear up and do it myself. Walls, ceilings, doors, siding, furniture, shutters, chandeliers—you name it, I’ve probably painted it, as the splatters on my painting jeans, plucked from a thrift store bin about four years ago, attest to. Once I had 800 feet of new wood baseboards and window trim installed and didn’t think twice about painting all of it myself. Seven months and two pairs of…

if you do only one thing this month: buy better beach towels

* Pick 100% cotton. It absorbs water better than a poly blend.* Know the difference between terry and velour. Terry cloth has hundreds of loops and absorbs water more easily than velour, which has a smooth, shiny finish.* Beach towels measure about a foot longer than standard bath towels, clocking in at around 70 inches long and 35 inches wide. Souvenir towels and ones made for kids may be smaller.* Wash beach towels separately the first few times in case the dyes run. After that, toss them in with your other cotton laundry.* HomeGoods, Kohl’s, and T.J.Maxx sell well-made beach towels at a discount. Or catch sales at department stores such as Macy’s after Labor Day.STYLIST: CARLA GONZALEZ-HART; HAT: HATATTACK.COM; FLOORING: CREEKSIDE OAK BY PERGO, LOWES.COM ■…
