In case you're curious about what I'm wearing… TOP Splendid gingham shirt PANTS White House Black Market jeans NAIL POLISH L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche nail polish in tangerine crush SHOES Superga sneakers FOR SHOPPING SOURCES, SEE PAGE 150. The thing I love most about paint is that as soon as you give something a fresh coat of color, it really feels like yours. It might be a piece of furniture that lived in someone else's house or something new that's never been painted. Either way, when you paint it, you make it your own. Give a room a fresh color and just like that, it has your personal stamp. That's why I have no problem painting anything and everything in my home—floors, doors, furniture, light fixtures, patio furniture: You name it, I'll paint it. (And, yes,…

letters: dear hgtv magazine

The Clasen home in Newport Beach, CA (March's "A Cool Idea in Every Room"), is hands down the best home you have ever featured. Dark gray walls! An Eames recliner! White oak kitchen cabinets! A bocce court! Every photo was a visual treat. I'd love to see more homes like this one. —Molly Goldthwait, Buffalo, NY For years I had been wanting a ship chandelier to hang in my bathroom, but I couldn't find one that was the right size—or price. That's why I was so excited to see the one from PB Teen in your March issue ("The High/Low List"). I ordered it immediately. —Birgitt van Wijk, Houston, TX I've been collecting copies of HGTV Magazine for so long that I now have an impressive set. I find many of the articles useful,…

how bad is it…

…to release helium balloons into the air? Hold on tight to that string. While it's believed some balloons shatter into tiny pieces when they reach a certain height in the atmosphere, "many others will float back to the land or water," says Darby Hoover, senior resource specialist at the Natural Resources Defense Council. Latex balloons can take several years to biodegrade, and Mylar balloons never do. What doesn't end up in a landfill can harm animals (marine life included), who could mistake pieces of balloons for food—and die if they eat them. So pop and toss balloons at your party's end. Super bad! …to borrow or lend earbuds? Sharing earbuds sounds grosser than it is. "Yes, bacteria live on ear skin, but they're mostly harmless," says Lisa Sturm, director of Infection Prevention and Epidemiology…

vern's to-do list

1 Paint the front door a fresh color. To make sure the shade you pick doesn't clash with your siding, figure out if your home's exterior has a warm or cool undertone, and stick to the same family when you choose the color for your door. If you aren't sure which category your house falls into, an expert at the paint store can help you. 2 Shop I'm a big fan of the Beekman Boys, two guys who have a farm and store in New York plus an online shop that sells everything from furniture to soap. Most of the products are handcrafted by the men or fellow artisans, and they're excellent quality. 3 Lighten up my home fragrance. People don't often think about how a room smells, but it's important!…
