ready for a pop!

Caring for a home is a big juggling act. Last weekend I cleaned my mini blinds, unclogged my shower drain for the umpteenth time, priced out porcelain tiles for my laundry room/mudroom, called the HVAC guy to get an estimate on a new compressor (ouch), and looked into deer-resistant plants. And that was just Saturday. But what about the fun stuff? It’s also important to make time to give our home the decorating fluff-ups it deserves. So put down that laundry basket and get comfortable on your sofa. Now look through our second-annual Pop of Color special section, starting on page 95. Over the past few months, the editors and I have searched for the best and brightest finds that can instantly perk up a room—93 in all—from a yellow…

dear hgtv magazine

Many thanks to Donna Barnett [in September’s “I Decorated My House for Me and Only Me!”] for the idea to use a folding screen as a headboard. After seeing her bedroom, I decided to rescue a screen that had been all but forgotten at my motherin-law’s house. I just had to paint it white, and now it looks great. —Meg McDonald, Niceville, FL A friend gave me a subscription to HGTV Magazine, and I’m loving the practical tips on everything from food safety and decluttering to paint colors and decorating. Perusing every page is so fun. In the March issue, I especially liked the green front door [“Come On In!”] and “50 Things You Can Toss,” which I definitely needed. —Mary Lem, Chilliwack, British Columbia I absolutely love the idea of painting a pattern…

hgtv smart home 2016: it could be yours!

Thanks to an automated smart home system, everything from the fireplace in the master bedroom to the lock on the front door can be controlled with an app. Goodbye, cords and cables! Two wall-mounted charging docks—one in the living room, one in the basement media room— wirelessly charge iPads. When an iPad is placed on a dock (magnets keep it in place), it starts juicing up automatically. Digital controls adjust the water flow and temperature in the master bathroom’s spaworthy shower, which boasts four horizontal body sprayers and a rainfall showerhead. “It’s so luxe—and smart!” says Tiffany. “The shower learns your preferred settings.” about the house Built in five months, the approximately 3,300-square-foot home has a Craftsman-meets-cottage style. There are four bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms over three floors, including a master…

8 questions for the winner of ellen’s design challenge

1. Was being a welder and a metalsmith an advantage? It helped to have a lot of hands-on experience going in. I have made everything from a steel-and-concrete chair to an aluminum bench. Plus I knew how to take a piece from concept to completion, though I’d usually spend a year working on that piece. 2. Each episode shows you building a piece of furniture in 72 hours. But didn’t you have more time? We actually had less. That 72 hours includes filming and judging, so we didn’t get full workdays. To stay focused, Matt Blashaw—he was my carpenter—and I would pretend it was always the final five minutes. All the time we’re building, we’re thinking, There’s only five minutes left! I also drank tons of iced coffee because it was a 110°…
