come to our party!

It’s our birthday, and we invite you to join our celebration! So bring a party hat—and maybe a slice of cake—and check out all the activities in this issue. You’ll find a special two-page Hidden Pictures puzzle, plus more hidden objects to look for on the front cover. We hope you’ll also like the other puzzles, the cute craft (I’ll say “gnome” more!), the very tiny recipe, and the thinking questions that’ll tickle your brain. To add to the fun, we’ve “decorated” this entire issue with all kinds of birthday references. How many can you find? Be sure to look in the words and the art. Birthdays mark the passing of time. But even better, birthdays mark a new beginning—the start of another year of living, learning, loving, and laughing. My favorite thing…

June 21 GO Skateboarding DAY On June 21, skateboarders celebrate Go Skateboarding Day. Lately, some impressive kids have been taking the sport by storm. Last spring, 11-year-old Gui Khury from Brazil became the first person to land a 1080—that’s three full spins in the air—on a vertical ramp. With more time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gui practiced every day until he finally landed the trick. Sky Brown is another amazing 11-year-old. Sky has skateboarded in competitions all over the world. She is set to become Great Britain’s youngest summer Olympian in history, now that skateboarding has been added to the lineup of Olympic games. Whether you’re landing amazing tricks or are new to the sport, grab your deck (skateboard), helmet, and knee and elbow pads and celebrate Go Skateboarding Day! Hockey Hijinks The Stanley…

power in poetry

Poet and activist Amanda Gorman is passionate about helping kids see that they can change the world with their words and actions. Her forthcoming book, Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem, celebrates this idea. Gorman struggled with speech issues while growing up. She embraced writing as a way to express herself. In high school, she decided that to fully share her poems, she would need to perform them, so she worked to overcome her challenge. In 2017, when she was 19, Gorman became the first U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate. She has performed her poems at the Library of Congress, at Lincoln Center, at the Super Bowl, and at the Inauguration of President Joseph Biden in January 2021.…

racing toward kindness

Ten-year-old Orion Jean has always known that kindness is important. He often practiced it by volunteering with his family. But last year, after entering the National Kindness Speech Contest, he became passionate about it. Now he works to spread kindness everywhere through projects that help others. He calls his campaign the Race to Kindness. Spreading Hugs After a teacher told him about the contest, Orion had only 24 hours to write, memorize, and record his speech. In it, he talked about the importance of kindness—especially right now, when many are facing difficulties from the pandemic and dealing with injustice. “Kindness is like spreading hugs around the world to those who need it and those who may not know they need it,” Orion said. He encouraged listeners to join him in “the race of…

Top Slices These yummy cakes topped a recent poll. There are 19 LESS common birthdays than February 29, even though it occurs only once every FOUR years! Evelyn Age 9 • Michigan On our way home from camping, my dad and I saw a bald eagle! It looked sooo big! It picked up something, then flew into the air.
