from the editor...

With the year’s big events fast selling out, hopefully you’ve already got your A-race booked and in the diary. But if you’re also looking to try something a bit different in 2019, then this is the issue for you! The beauty of being multisport athletes is that we’re not afraid to mix it up a bit, so if you fancy building on the swim/bike/run format and throwing in something new, then turn to p42. Whether it’s taking your racing off-road and hitting the trails (my challenge for the year!), throwing in a bit of kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, or losing one of the disciplines and trying your hand at swimrun, duathlon, aquathlon or aquabike, there’s bound to be something to re-ignite your multisport passion. Have fun – and let us…

the best triathlon kit reviews

We take gear testing seriously – you need to know that the kit you buy will help you reach your goals in all three disciplines and work as hard as you on race day. Our test team is made up of experienced triathletes, cyclists and runners who test each product that appears in 220 to the max during training and racing, rating it honestly for performance and value. JACK SEXTY A triathlete since blowing his student loan on a bike, sub-2hr Olympic athlete Jack moved to Ironman at Lanzarote in 2016. Favourite multisport adventure? “Duathlon. Happiest when in the open water, she also competes in swimrun. Favourite multisport adventure? “Swimrun…

innovative approach needed

At a recent Challenge brand event in Taiwan, a large board at the check-in encouraged triathletes to sign under the slogan ‘I SUPPORT NO DRAFTING’. While the sentiment is to be applauded, it’s going to need far more practical efforts to rectify this blight on the sport. Firstly, technical officials need to feel empowered to make tough calls. In a 70.3 in Utah in May, German 2014 world Ironman champ Sebastian Kienle picked up a first drafting penalty in his distinguished career. It was contentious because the athlete ahead had swung wide on a corner and could have been penalised for blocking. But while Kienle disagreed with the call, his response, “I like the referees to be as strict as possible, so I guess I should calm the f**k down,” welcomed…

garmin forerunner 945

Not content with dominating the sports watch market, Garmin have just released another batch of Forerunners for the 2019 race season. The range includes a Forerunner 45, 45S, 245, 245 Music, and the top-end Forerunner 945, seen here. A sequel to the 935, the 945 holds up to 1,000 songs and allows athletes to sync playlists from streaming services (including Spotify) or transfer music from a computer. It has a Garmin Pay contactless function and colour maps for the bike and run. Performance tools include a new training load focus, which files an athlete’s recent training history into different categories based on activity structure and intensity. A Pulse Ox function displays how well the body is absorbing oxygen. Battery life is two weeks in smartwatch mode, 36hrs in GPS and 10hrs…
