gumotex

In 2016 the Czech based GUMOTEX celebrates 60 years in the inflatable boat business. Already a major player on the European scene, GUMOTEX Boats&Outdoor is still growing despite fierce competition from far-east manufacturers. Their recent acquisition of INNOVA, a North American brand, exemplifies their never-ending ambitions. We met with Marketing Manager Lucie Kadlecová, to know more about this success story from the Czech Republic. BG Mag: Today GUMOTEX is not limited to the production of inflatable boats, is it? Could you please introduce your company and your areas of interest ? The GUMOTEX company is renowned in the area of plastics, focusing in particular on products made from polyurethane and EPP foams and rubber-textile-based materials with high utility properties. We consistently rank among the leading Czech exporters; Gumotex exports more than 60%…

3d: the future?

It is an exciting alternative for the future of custom, affordable watersports equipment, but will it work? We met with Pelle Stafshede, the visionary behind Melker Kayaks to hear more about this intriguing possibility. “3D-technology introduces completely new opportunities for personalization and product development,” asserts Pelle Stafshede. Highly specialized, 3D Printers convert a digital blue print to a physical object drop by drop, layer by layer, with liquid “ink”. “Its basically a big robot standing on a rail,” describes Stafshede. Most work with melted plastic, but others have been modified to use metals, natural fibers, even food. “We plan on using waste products from local saw mills in combination with recycled plastic for boats that are environmentally low impact,” says Pelle. “Eventually, we want to introduce bio-plastic, with various natural fibers like bamboo…

the emergent hybrid market

This year at PADDLEexpo, we see a growing movement in the “Hybrid” market with designers merging craft concepts to create new products capable of going anywhere, doing anything. A popular and logical blend is the merging of Stand Up Paddle Boards and Sit-on-Top Kayaks. Designed primarily for use on flatwater and gentle currents, these hybrids can be adapted for use in on-water fitness regimes, or outfitted for fishing. Other blends like AquaDesign’s WindSup Ibrid, combine SUP technology with Windsurfing, giving the user the option of attaching a second fin and a sail. Woosung’s Airrow merges Surfski speed and performance with inflatable SUP durability and user-friendly appeal, while Hala Gear’s ButterKnife Paddle can be used as a SUP or Kayak Paddle. It is easy to see the attraction for the consumer. Hybrids mean…

old school is the new cool

In the years since, as boats have changed and progressed, so have conceivable boundaries of what is considered possible in a kayak. Designs became far more specific with shorter and more performance playboats oriented towards aggressive freestyle maneuvers on holes and waves. Creekboats gained volume and rocker, with lifted bows to stay on top of the water and be forgiving down steep, rocky creeks. Today, there is a shift towards designs that embrace downriver play. Companies are looking back to the future with kayaks inspired in part by the RPM generation, choosing to update older designs with a modern twist. This year, Lettmann reintroduced the “Plan B”, a boat initially manufactured in Carbon for the 1999 Freestyle World Championship. The New Plan B comes in user-friendly polyethelene plastic with modern outfitting for…

on the rise the dropstitch revolution

With more companies unveiling updated inflatable technology and carbon/inflatable hybrids for 2017’s inflatable market, the 2017 Paddle Expo proved inflatables are on the rise, showcasing products that are bridging the performance gap. Developments in drop stitch technology and the use of PVC stringers have revolutionized inflatable performance. In the SUP market, this is evident as manufacturers expand inflatable options from primarily “all around” and “cruiser” style entry-level models to inflatables of every genre, even high performance surf and race boards. “Unlike traditional fabrics used for inflatable products, drop stitch, once inflated, can produce incredibly strong flat surfaces, due to the important pressure made possible by the technology,“ clarifies Aquadesign’s Terry Barbier. Aquadesign’s 2017 product lineup includes a 12’6 SUP featuring “Bidrop”, with two different thicknesses of drop stitch (15cm and 7…
