It is about trends. It is about new products, new concepts, new players. It is also about old friends. It is about paddlesports in all its forms. What we are talking about is the paddlesport gear addict’s favorite annual publication: the PADDLEexpo All Paddlesports Buyers Guide. It’s 200+ pages filled with classics, new products, markets trends, innovations, creativity and inspiration—inspiration to try something new, do something different, and to get outside and into or onto the water. But we are also talking about something larger. As we move further into the digital era we risk disappearing behind screens, relying on technology rather than face-to-face communication. It is vital to have somewhere to meet, assemble, communicate, touch base, share ideas and re-form as a community. It is the same with this Buyers Guide. Information on…

SPECIAL JURY PRIZE - STARBOARD | ALL STAR AIRLINE Exceptionally fast and well-mannered, this paddleboard is amongst the most rigid iSUPs ever made. (level 6 founder) stig larsson

When Stig Larsson started Level Six, a whitewater kayaking and apparel company based in eastern Canada, little did he know that it would become one of the main players, not only within the whitewater scene but also within the industries of touring, SUP, and river lifestyle apparel. Now celebrating 20 years in business, the former Canadian National team member still has more tricks up his sleeve. Instead of simply savoring his success, Larsson is already focusing on the next step, developing a distribution network in Canada. In the days following Level Six’s win for Coolest Gear of the Show in the Apparel Category, we met up with Stig to hear more. Buyers Guide Mag: How long have you been running Level Six for? How did you start? Stig Larsson: Level Six was…

crowd funding the future

The process of designing, creating, and manufacturing a new product is costly and time consuming. Finding investors who believe in you or fundraising the costs can be a challenge, no matter the product you are creating or how well established your company may be. This could be about to change. Thanks to the advent of the Internet, online pay-systems, and crowd-funding sites like KickStarter or IndieGoGo, new opportunities are available to companies to share their vision and find individuals who believe in their products. Nowhere is this more evident than in the success story of Trak Kayaks, a company from northern Canada. Trak has been manufacturing portable performance kayaks since 2006. Their goal: “Build awesome kayaks that transform paddling adventures.” With the building and development of their Trak 2.0 Ultimate Touring Kayak,…

why wooden paddles are never out of style.

Traditionally, all paddles were made of wood. Yet, with the advent of new materials and technology, the market has become saturated with paddles at every performance level, from entry-level to high end providing a wide range of choice for all sports. Despite modern innovations and newer materials available at ever-lower prices, many paddlers are choosing to stick with or return to wood. At PADDLEexpo, wooden paddles were on display in every price range for almost any paddling discipline, from Freefall’s custom-made Re- Paddles to Palm’s Delta, a molded‚ laminated ponderosa pine-walnut-ash blade. What is it about a wooden paddle that has stood the test of time? Some argue that the biggest advantage of wood lies in its visual appeal; others tout the feel of a wooden paddle, the options different woods…

the dropstitch revolution 2.0

At the 2016 PADDLEexpo, the Dropstitch revolution was evident, as inflatables from SUPs to iKayaks utilized this game-changing technology. “Inflatable are on the rise,” we asserted in the Buyers Guide Magazine, attributing the increase in inflatable performance to Dropstitch’s superior rigidity. Dropstitch, which involves using vertical fibers of uniform length to connect an upper and lower face of waterproof, airtight material, allows for inflatables to achieve pressures of up to 15 psi, creating rigid and stable inflatables. Stiffer hulls and firmer boards equal higher performance, while increased durability means greater potential for exploration. “Dropstitch hulls capable of inflating to higher PSI also help reduce friction and drag as crafts move through the water, minimizing wake and the energy required while enhancing tracking and glidability,” explained inflatable company Woosung. “Dropstitch—a high tech material…
