SWEET on SUSHI Everyone on staff had the same reaction when they saw community member Wyattdogster’s spin on rice cereal treats: “OMG, those are awesome!” Bring a tray of these to any party, and you’ll hear the same thing. What you need: your favorite rice cereal treat recipe, Swedish Fish, fat red licorice sticks, and fruit leather. Instead of pressing the cereal mixture into a pan, do one of two things: For “nigiri sushi,” form little torpedo shapes with buttered hands, then top with a gummy fish and wrap with a narrow band of fruit leather. For the “norimaki roll,” put a sheet of fruit leather on a work surface, and top it with a thin layer of cereal mixture. Lay two licorice sticks horizontally on the side closest to you,…

passover passed down

When I was growing up in suburban New Jersey, our home was always bustling during Passover. We weren’t strictly observant all year, but we did follow some holiday traditions, like changing out the dishes and clearing the kitchen of leavened foods. Our “special” Passover dishes were made of light green Depression glass, and I have clear memories of eating my mother’s many holiday recipes from them. Eight days’ worth of meals without bread, pasta, or beans really limited our options, but she was an excellent cook and produced an endless variety of matzo dishes. Brei, pancakes, lasagna, and apple shalet were always on the menu alongside her kugel made with spinach, cheese, vegetables, or herbs. Watching Mom in the kitchen inspired my passion for cooking.
