A homecoming event in Sydney to celebrate ArtAsiaPacific’s 25th anniversary and the opening of the 21st Biennale of Sydney—graciously hosted by art patrons Gene Sherman and Andrew Cameron—brought together many editors and contributors from the magazine’s early years in Australia, as well as young artists, students and writers. The gathering encapsulated our focus this year of looking forward and backward, while still savoring the effervescence of the present moment. This juxtaposition is reflected in the main Features of our May/June issue. From the present we introduce Istanbul-based artist Cevdet Erek, whose conceptual, architectural installations are derived from his reflections on sound as a marker of time and social progression. We’re not normally drawn to bad boys. In fact, we swing more for bookish, soft-spoken types. Johann Georg Hamann, however, is the exception to the rule. He was the enfant terrible of the Counter-Enlightenment and wore the badge with pride. Kierkegaard called him “the greatest humorist in the world.” Goethe considered him the brightest mind of his time; and Isaiah Berlin dubbed him “one of the few wholly original critics of modern times.” Hamann wasn’t just dark. He was the darkest. A book on German prose style says that compared to Hamann, “Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit is… perfect vacation reading.” The superlatives he garnered from fanboys and frenemies alike are worthy of a Marvel comic. All art in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) is produced by the state, and is primarily controlled by the three main art studios in Pyongyang: Mansudae, Paekho and Central Art Studio. Mansudae is the largest art “collective.” Yet its sales are currently experiencing a low due to sanctions and the decline in tourist numbers. On August 5, 2016, after North Korea’s missile tests, the UN Security Council subjected Mansudae to a global asset freeze, effectively banning the export of artworks and construction projects like the recently completed visitor center in Angkor Wat, Cambodia, and the African Renaissance Monument in Dakar, Senegal. Showrooms at both Mansudae and Paekho consist of all manner of fine arts: oils, ink, linocuts, embroidery, sculpture, celadon pottery and “powder” painting (using crushed stone to produce…

Bangladeshi artist Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury picked up the Samdani Art Award at the 2018 Dhaka Art Summit on February 6, receiving a six-week residency with the Delfina Foundation in London. On March 8, Emirati artist Farah al-Qasimi was presented with the New Art Dealers Alliance Artadia Award at the opening of the alliance’s New York art fair. yuz and lacma form historic partnership

On March 28, Indonesian-Chinese entrepreneur, collector and Yuz Museum founder Budi Tek announced an agreement between Yuz and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) that would see a series of joint programming, and a donation of 1,500 works from Tek’s contemporary art collection to a foundation in which the two institutions would be equal partners. Tek, who was receiving chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer in Frankfurt at the time, made the announcement via video at a panel discussion hosted by Art Agency, Partners in Hong Kong. As part of the deal—the first of its kind between an American and a Chinese institution—Yuz will also gain access to LACMA’s collections of American, European and Latin American art.
