shop of the month

Tucked away in the coastal town of Stonehaven, My Beautiful Caravan boasts a small but mighty trove of gifts, stationery and homewares. Featuring funky tea towels, cool prints and playful melamine plates, this wee boutique is ideal for that person who thinks they have everything. ‘We pride ourselves on our quirky, retro vibe, great customer service and unusual, design-led products,’ says owner Jennifer Davidson, whose specially commissioned Stonehaven range features the local open-air pool and Dunnottar Castle. The handpainted glass bauble, depicting a ‘skyline’ of local coastal attractions, is top of our wish list (mybeautifulcaravan.co.uk). Wild waters Stormy seas, sweeping coastline and brooding skies form the inspiration for landscape artist Sarah Evans, who paints to commission from her studio in South Wales. Using two different styles of realism and expression, Sarah works…

hot hotel

WHAT’S THE BUZZ? If, like me, your passions are the sea and the forest, this is the perfect location for an escape. Tucked away in one of the most beautiful parts of the New Forest, this hotel is also just 20 minutes’ drive to the beach huts at Milford-on-Sea, or beautiful Calshot Beach. Offering the best of both worlds, you can go horse riding through the forest in the morning, then go paddleboarding in the afternoon. Originally built as a private country estate, the opulent Grade II-listed building and gardens were designed by William Henry Romaine-Walker and Augustus William Tanner in the late 19th century. The gardens went into decline after WWII but were fully restored in the late 1980s and can be enjoyed by hotel residents. There is an…

lino printing in seaton

When Victorian businessman Frederick Walton invented linoleum in 1860, he would never have imagined that his floor covering, made from linseed oil, would soon be used as an artist’s medium; a surface into which a design could be gouged, from which a reverse image is printed. Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso popularised the art form during the 1940s and 50s. If, at school, you progressed from potato prints to lino prints, you might remember tough floor tiles that were difficult to cut. Today, soft polymer sheets made especially for cutting and printing from, are much easier to work with.
