In the past 10 years, the big surf discoveries, have, surprisingly, been in Africa—and the scene here doesn’t involve any Hawaiian shirts and SoCal woody wagons. “Here, surfing is about explorations,” says Andy Davis, cofounder of Cape Town-based surf brand Mami Wata (named after the African water spirit), “in places that are still so wild—jungles, deserts and unspoiled vistas—where there could be crocs and hippos in the water.” Davis, owner of South African surf magazine Zigzag, launched the brand along with Nick Dutton, a former advertising executive, and Peet Pienaar, a designer. The trio develops and manufactures all of Mami Wata’s products locally. In DC, Watching Oprah: The Oprah Winfrey Show and American Culture opened this month at the National Museum of African American History & Culture (nmaahc.si.edu). On till the end of the month, the exhibit will use the story of America’s first female African American billionaire and her legendary daytime talk show to examine her impact on the country and vice versa. While you’re there, check out the never-before-seen portrait of American abolitionist Harriet Tubman. Also in the American capital, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (naturalhistory.si.edu) is all set to welcome back many of its residents, including the iconic T. rex, after a five-year renovation of its fossil hall. The new 31,000sq ft hall will be home to more than 700 specimens of dinosaurs, plants, insects and other animals.…
