from the editor

The world sucks sometimes. Whether it’s political turmoil, virus outbreaks or communities battered by storms and fires, it would be easy to lose hope. But we don’t think you should. And this issue is dedicated to showing you why. Because there’s still a lot to feel positive about. This month, I lost a family member to cancer. Grief is a nasty beast to battle, but it has also thrown the things I have to feel good about into sharp relief. The good things feel that much more precious and the need to cling on to them that bit more urgent. It has reminded me of the need to surround yourself with people who make you feel seen, feel supported, feel loved. It has also reminded me that it’s OK to remove…

Just scroll with it Perrie Edwards takes a well-deserved break from our cover shoot. Is she: a) Ordering an ASOS haul? b) Updating her feed? or c) Getting a Deliveroo direct to the studio? We’ll never know. Puppy love The real star of the show this issue was Hatchi, Perrie’s mischievous Pomeranian pup, who arrived on set in a denim hoodie and proceeded to try to eat as much of the shoot-food as possible. Hatchi, we salute you. Super crew The fashion and video teams (clockwise from top: Maddy, Alex, Laura, Natasha and Tyra) are all smiles after a long day of styling the fashion story on p108. Vast quantities of caffeine and Haribo – just out of shot. Recording: in session Laura and Paisley, the hosts of our new sex and relationships podcast All The Way…

drama queens

If you’ve been mourning the loss of Big Little Lies, you’re in luck. Reese Witherspoon is back in another dramatic book adaptation that’ll have you immediately cancelling plans and pulling sickies. Little Fires Everywhere, adapted from the Celeste Ng novel of the same, tells the story of Mia (Kerry Washington) and her daughter Pearl whose lives become intertwined with that of Elena Richardson (Reese Witherspoon) and her creepily picture-perfect family. Cue stunning hair and even more stunning drama. Out in the US now, coming to the UK soon…

in with the new

Little Fires Everywhere The intense novel – about Mia, her daughter and the family of busybody Elena – is now a series. It’s producer Reese Witherspoon’s latest book adaptation (following Gone Girl and Big Little Lies). Who’s in it? Reese herself, plus Kerry Washington and Pacey – sorry – Joshua Jackson. Just hype? Far from it. It’s the perfect mash-up of drama, brilliant scriptwriting and suspense. Americanah An adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel, in which a young Nigerian woman (Ifemelu) immigrates from Lagos to America for university. It follows her love story with a former classmate and her first experiences of racism in the US. Who’s in it? Lupita Nyong’o and Uzo Aduba. I mean… Just hype? The book is both brilliant and important. Couple that with Nyong’o and Aduba and you’ve got yourselves a winner. Belgravia We have big news, Carson!…

2009 ROARING TRADE When PWB met Hot Priest: she appeared alongside Andrew Scott in a play about a London investment bank – Waller-Bridge’s stage debut after leaving RADA. Only 10 years to go until his famous Fleabag “kneel” moment. 2010 HOW NOT TO LIVE YOUR LIFE Filmed a “comedy sex montage” for her role in this TV series. In an interview with Tina Fey she said, “I had to wear a moustache and be naked and spank a man and demand to be called ‘Uncle’. I had to wee on him.” 2016 FLEABAG Critics called it “wearisome” at its 2013 Edinburgh Fringe debut, but after landing on BBC Three it quickly acquired a cult following. Fast-forward to 2019 and PWB scores three Emmy Awards and a reported £16m deal to make new projects with Amazon. Not bad. 2016 CRASHING Wrote and…

ask me anything

Ever used the “bend and snap” in real life, and did it work? I haven’t. I’m not that limber so it doesn’t look good when I do it. But I always get asked. People will come up to me in the street and say, “Can I just do a bend and snap with you real quick and my son will film it?” How does it feel to be a cult icon? I think I’ve just outlasted a lot of my peers. People have passed away. Now I’m in my nineties [she’s 58], it’s nice to be thought of that way, it’s a little unexpected treat. What’s your favourite bit of life advice? It’s great to have friends who are older because they have perspective and wisdom. You once said that you have bedazzled Mace in your…
