THE COUNTRY CLASSICS CALLING LONDON HOME Beaverbrook Town House, 115–116, Sloane Street, SW1 So much for the urban mass migration: all the best country-house hotels are welcoming city siblings. Gleneagles in Perthshire now has Gleneagles Townhouse in Edinburgh; Chewton Glen in the New Forest, and Cliveden in Berkshire, have The Mayfair Townhouse; Beaverbrook hotel and spa in Surrey has Beaverbrook Town House. It overlooks the Grade-II listed Cadogan Gardens (guests can request a key) and has 14 suites, an Art Deco bar, a Japanese fine-dining restaurant and a private event space. The original Beaverbrook's much-loved interiors haven't lost any of their quirky charm and playfulness. The suites are named after historic London theatres. Ask for The Adelphi-a television pops theatrically out of a blue linen-covered cabinet at the end of the bed…

sky-high living

A COLLECTION of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments has gone on sale inside the tallest residential and hospitality tower ever to be built inside the City of London. One Bishopsgate Plaza comprises a Pan Pacific Hotel (the Singaporian company’s first hotel in Europe) and 160 private apartments, which, although entirely separate, come with access to all of the hotel’s amenities (including the spa, gym, room service and infinity pool). A two-minute walk from Liverpool Street Station, the apartments all feature floor-to-ceiling windows with far-reaching views, many of Tower Bridge. If that’s not enough to get your adrenaline pumping, there’s a communal sky terrace on the 34th floor and, closer to earth, a residents-only bar, library and meeting rooms on the 20th floor. The building is part of a wider development and plan…

back to nature

THE future looks leafy, especially on Chelsea’s Pont Street, now home to London’s first heritage forest. The somewhat surprising project is thanks to SUGi (an organisation dedicated to restoring 100% of native forests in urban spaces), Louis Vuitton and Cadogan (which manages about 90 acres of Chelsea and Knightsbridge). They have teamed up with the aim of restoring some of the capital’s biodiversity and native bees and other pollinators. The 240sq m pocket forest will comprise 630 native trees and shrubs, carefully planted to give the forest four distinct layers: a dense forest floor, sub-trees, trees and a canopy. The wide variety of species, 77 in total, including red campion, sessile oak and hawthorn, will support at least 80 species of insect and ensure that the forest will require minimal maintenance,…
