staying the course

I write this note at an unprecedented moment in modern history, when an increasing number of countries are closing their borders and advising against all travel in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. Flights are being canceled, cruise lines are suspending their operations, and national lockdowns are threatening to keep everyone at home. I know the world will recover from this, and I fervently hope that the tide will turn in the months ahead. Until then, though, we must all brace ourselves for major disruptions to our lives. For DestinAsian, this means the cancellation or our annual June/July Islands Issue. The magazine you’re holding in your hands will regrettably be the last one you see until August, when I hope our regular publishing cycle will resume. This has not been an…

hide and seek

Social distancing is the mantra of the moment, and few places are better equipped for that than Te Whare Ruruhau (; full board from US$1,164), a new wilderness cabin on almost 6,900 hectares of private Maori-owned land in the center of New Zealand’s North Island. With a name meaning “house of shelter,” the solar-powered hideout is only accessible by helicopter—guests are whisked there from Taupo Airport in 25 minutes flat. Built on native bushland traversed by streams and walking trails, it sleeps up to four people in two bedrooms, one clad entirely in glass for sublime stargazing from the comfort of your bed. All meals are cooked by a dedicated host, and there’s also the option to hire a guide for insights on Maori traditions and the rugged surroundings. But…

a milestone for the met

The New York businessmen, civic leaders, and artists who banded together in 1870 to form a public institution for “encouraging and developing the study of the fine arts,” and “advancing the general knowledge of kindred subjects” couldn’t have known that their project would blossom into the United States’ largest art museum and one of the city’s top attractions. Today, the Metropolitan Museum of Art ( is spread across three locations, and culture vultures have even more reason to visit this year thanks to the institution’s sesquicentennial celebrations. At the flagship venue on the edge of Central Park, the British Galleries have been given their first major renovation since opening in the 1980s. Reimagined spaces now gather nearly 700 works under the theme of British decorative arts—encompassing furniture, ceramics, silverware, and tapestries—from…

Getting There South African carrier Airlink ( flies daily from Johannesburg to Kasane airport, right on the doorstep of the national park. Where to Stay The sole safari property in the park’s northeastern sector is the riverside Chobe Game Lodge (; from US$590 per person), which operates a fleet of electric 4x4 vehicles and solar-powered boats. What Else? Chobe extends to where Botswana’s borders meet those of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. As such, it’s possible to visit Victoria Falls, just a 90-minute drive from Kasane, on a day trip. When it comes to seeing African elephants in the wild, few safari destinations can top Chobe National Park, a Qatar-sized wildlife refuge in northeastern Botswana. Some estimates put its resident pachyderm population at 120,000—more than a quarter of the total number of elephants in all of Africa.…

neihu’s new appeal

Separated from downtown Taipei by the Keelung River and cradled by a thickly forested mountain range, Neihu fueled much of Taiwan’s technology boom in the ’90s. IT and multimedia companies still occupy large, multistory buildings on its tree-lined streets, but the park-studded district has evolved into much more than simply a place for work, with creative restaurants and bars putting down roots alongside an established clutch of art galleries. Today, Neihu is emerging as a vibrant yet laid-back alternative to the more crowded neighborhoods just across the river. • WHERE TO EAT Tucked amid the smart office blocks of Neihu Technology Park, Lazy Point ( is a three-story, botanical-themed restaurant that serves a toothsome filet mignon and stewed beef tongue. On balmy evenings, cocktails are served on an open-air roof terrace decked…
