happy inside

Welcome to our Summer special edition – hence the different paper, it’s all about tactility! – which this year is devoted to ‘wellbeing at home’. Why? Because we figured that we all tend to feel better about life, ourselves and the universe when the sun shines, and we wanted to explore how to harness that feeling, all year round. But, what has this to do with interiors? Well, I fervently believe that our homes have the power to physically affect our health and happiness. Home should be a place that rejuvenates and restores. And, as Editor-in-Chief of ELLE Decoration, I’ve been fortunate enough to see inside many different homes, and the ones I’ve chosen to publish deliberately cover a variety of looks, sizes and locations. However, they always have one…

Our sedentary lifestyles are blamed for a number of health issues from heart disease to diabetes. To combat this, we’ve seen a rise in ‘standing’ heightadjustable desks, which – while health benefits are still unproven – are reputed to increase calorie consumption, concentration and improve alertness. How does it work? Varidesk’s weighted modules sit on an existing desk or table and allow you to speedily go from sitting to standing by simply squeezing the levers and raising the work surface. There’s no need to clear your desk – the movement won’t knock anything…

27 scents and sensibility

Since ancient Egypt, when incense concocted from spices and honey was used to purify temples and homes, people have had faith in the link between scent and wellbeing. We still do today, though scientific proof of any tangible physical effects may be scant. ‘There is very little clinical research into the effects of aroma on wellbeing – except for lavender, which has been proven to have a relaxing and sleep-inducing effect,’ says Jo Fairley, co-founder of The Perfume Society. Nevertheless, the psychological pull of scent is strong. ‘The human olfactory centre is linked to the brain’s limbic system, which registers emotion and stores our memories,’ explains Michael Donovan, perfume expert and owner of south-east London lifestyle store Roullier White. ‘For this reason, our noses affect the way we react with…

32 caravan of love

CARAVAN OF LOVE Walk the streets of Exmouth Market in Clerkenwell, London and you’ll likely smell the fresh coffee and hear the chatter coming from award-winning restaurant Caravan, which Laura Harper Hinton founded with her partner Chris Ammerman (left) and fellow New Zealander Miles Kirby in 2010. The laid-back vibe of the place (there are now two further branches at Granary Square, King’s Cross and south of the River Thames at Bankside) is much like the feeling you get in Laura’s own kitchen, located in the couple’s Victorian property in London’s Kensal Rise. Also home to the couple’s two sons, Arlo (five) and Otis (three), this is where some of the ideas for the seasonal dishes in new cookbook Caravan: Dining All Day (Vintage, £16.59) were first discussed. Here, Laura lets…

40 in conversation with liz ea

Long before eating clean and living green became a national pastime, Liz Earle was already digging around in the British Library archive for scientific papers on the properties of evening primrose oil or edible algae. Of course, her name is synonymous with the minty-green bottles of skincare lotions used by all generations (‘Cleanse and Polish’ is one of the UK’s bestselling beauty products). But search Instagram for Liz Earle and you’ll find a bevy of accounts. There’s @lizearlebeautyco (the eponymous beauty brand, which Earle and co-founder Kim Buckland sold in 2010; 73,300 followers), @lizearleme (the wellbeing guru’s personal account; 20,200 followers), @lizearlewellbeing (Earle’s website and quarterly magazine, of which she is editor-in-chief; 4,781 followers), and @lizearlejewels (her fairtrade jewellery brand; 1,000 followers). So, clearly a jack of many trades. But…
