THE VOICE OF NOW CANDICE CARTY-WILLIAMS Author Candice Carty-Williams is a south Londoner, through and through. She’s lived everywhere from Sydenham to Balham, and is now in Herne Hill with her hundreds of books: ‘I couldn’t live with another person again.’ Her debut novel Queenie may have landed a six-figure deal, but her proudest moment is ‘founding The Guardian and 4th Estate BAME Short Story Prize’. Candice’s head has always been in books: ‘I wanted to be a librarian when I grew up. Bit quiet for me, though.’ Candice meets a tarot reader on page 73 THE IMAGE-MAKER DANIEL CLAVERO Growing up in a Spanish household in South Beach, Florida, Daniel is a beach babe by birth. He had a ‘eureka!’ moment when shooting model Hilary Rhoda on one: ‘She opened my eyes to what…

editor’s letter

“WITHOUT LEAPS of IMAGINATION or DREAMING, WE LOSE the EXCITEMENTof POSSIBILITIES. DREAMING, AFTER ALL, IS A FORM of PLANNING”– Gloria Steinem After 15 years at ELLE, with the past two at the helm as Editor-in-Chief, this June issue is my last. It’s hard to put into words what a journey it has been and how it feels to say farewell to something I have loved ever since I bought the first issue, way back in 1985. Mostly, I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of such an extraordinary brand for a decade and a half. It’s been an absolute privilege. And what a wild, crazy and beautiful ride, filled with highs and lows (because in life it’s impossible to really cherish the good bits without acknowledging the challenging ones, too).…

to do this month

LISTEN West London’s AMA (@amasthetic) released her first single Monochrome last year – an R&B ode to confusing young love with effortlessly cool visuals – followed by Slip, which encourages you to take control of your own happiness. (Preach!) Expect soulful vocals and vivid storytelling from her debut EP. Out this month 2. SEE After a sell-out run at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, singer and impressionist Jess Robinson takes her No Filter show on a UK tour, ending at London’s Soho Theatre on 8 June. Expect impressions delivered with absolutely no filter. 3. DRINK Tequila sales have risen in the UK by 37% in the past two years. ¡Arriba! To celebrate the hard spirit, Eric Zandora has written The Tequila Dictionary, an A-Z of all things agave with hundreds of entries, exploring…

‘Utility’ was a buzzword at the SS19 shows, as a number of separates peppered with patch pockets, jumpsuits and hands-free accessories made their way down the catwalk. As a trend, you’d be right to think it’s nothing groundbreaking (women have been decked out in boiler suits since the Second World War, when Rosie the Riveter appeared on posters with the phrase ‘We Can Do It!’). However, as more female designers occupy positions at major houses and launch their own brands, utility style is breaking away from the classic blue-collar one-piece. The jumpsuit has taken on new character this spring. It’s searing scarlet at Hermès by creative director Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski, crisp white and slashed with polished gold zips at Stella McCartney, short-sleeved and pale blue at AlexaChung, and plastered with graphic art…

the news

THE MICRO TREND ALL THE TRIMMINGS ’Tis the season. You know what we’re talking about: weddings, pub garden drinks, long sunny evenings outdoors (hopefully). It’s when we want a smattering of something special to make an everyday outfit look less… well, ordinary. Time to take note from Valentino, Loewe and Dries Van Noten with SS19’s feathered trims. Plus the crystal and fringe at Chanel, Gucci and Jacquemus. Cheers to the finishing touches that are minimal on effort, big on impact (and save you schlepping a change of clothes in The Second Handbag). MARKET RESEARCH ARTFUL EARRINGS Whether by & Other Stories, in collaboration with artist Mia Larsson, or Bimba Y Lola, statement earrings are a shortcut to looking dressed up. THE MOOD DRESSING FOR THE AIR CON If you work in an office, we’re sure you’re familiar with…
