TWENTY YEARS AGO A SMALL group of people gathered in north Wales for an end-of-year group test to name evo’s very first Car of the Year. Our base was a farmhouse within throwing distance of an Anglesey Circuit prior to its redevelopment into the wonderful venue that it is today (it was still wonderful in 1998 with its double-decker-bus clubhouse) and our test route was the Snowdonia National Park. The weather was predictably awful (not sure why we went in November). And the cars? As is the case now they were the very best of the time. The headliner was Ferrari’s F355, complete with its fancy-pants F1 transmission. Alfa’s GTV played the back-up role of junior exotica. APPARENTLY THIS IS THE BEST PLACE TO HEAR it from. Standing round the back of Cell 9, a dyno room in the bowels of Cosworth, one of the engineers waggles a long door handle that looks like it might open an industrial freezer. He’s letting those controlling the engine on the other side know that we’re ready. The cells are meant to be soundproof, but they can’t quite contain the screams of engines from World Superbikes or Formula 1 cars. Or, as we’re about to find out, the Aston Martin Valkyrie. £1million gt-r ‘without limits’

NISSAN HAS CONFIRMED IT WILL BUILD 50 examples of its GT-R50 by Italdesign that made its debut in concept form at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed. It’s ‘a GT-R without limits’ according to Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s senior vice president for global design, and will closely ape the design and engineering of the concept. Prospective purchasers will need just over £1million to buy one, though. The GT-R50 is a celebration of both the GT-R and Italdesign’s half centuries. Drawing on existing styling cues, Nissan’s San Diego design hub was responsible for the styling, with the firm’s Paddington design office providing further refinements. McLAREN HAS LIFTED THE LID ON ITS LATEST Super Series model – the 720S Spider. Although the company’s decision to build a drop-top 720S is not an unexpected one, the coupe’s complex carbonfibre and glass canopy-style roof made it a challenging exercise to create a Spider version without diverging too much from the original’s dramatic aesthetic. McLaren’s answer is a new roof mechanism, comprising a single carbonfibre panel that retracts beneath a tonneau sitting over the engine compartment. As well as looking neater than the 650S Spider’s similar arrangement, which featured two panels split longitudinally, it also means the roof can be optionally specified in electrochromic glass, which is able to change between clear and opaque at the flick of a switch. MERCEDES-AMG HAS GONE ON THE OFFENSIVE with its GT, refreshing the model’s range in readiness for taking on the all-new 911 while also revealing an even-more-focused version of the hardcore GT R called the GT R Pro. All versions of the GT have gained new infotainment tech taken from the recently updated C-class, while there are also revised headlights and a heavily reworked set of driver modes. These modes now range from a new Slippery setting through to Race, and are supported by the addition of AMG Dynamics, which constantly monitors speed, steering angle and yaw to more effectively meter out torque from the 4-litre twin-turbo V8. 911 gt2 rs joins the club

IT’S BEEN QUITE SOME TIME SINCE PORSCHE last made a 911 GT2 race car, but over 20 years since the last factory-built examples left Weissach, Frank Walliser and his ridiculously talented team in Porsche’s Motorsport division have changed that with a new, track-only version of the 911 GT2 RS – the Clubsport. Its 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six and seven-speed PDK gearbox remain unchanged from the road car, with 690bhp sent to the rear wheels. What has changed is pretty much every body panel and aerodynamic device, and the interior too. Carbonfibre is used for the new front bonnet (with revised openings for cooling and airflow), engine cover, rear wing and roof (complete with escape hatch). There are also larger front intakes and aero-flicks on the leading outer edges of the front bumper.…
