living life 1km at a time

At the end of November last year I had the privilege of running my first mountain race. We travelled across the border into Lesotho, heading for Maliba Lodge in the Maluti Mountains, located in the Tsehlanyane National Park, to run the Lesotho Ultra Trail – Africa’s first Skymarathon. At a minimum elevation of 1943m and topping out at a breath-gasping 3144m, it’s a serious challenge for any runner. The route traverses intricate networks of hiking and livestock trails that exist along the valleys, mountain flanks, and mountain tops of the national park. Having never taken on a running challenge like this, I wasn’t sure what to expect or how my race would pan out. Regardless, I started the run filled with feelings of excitement and wonder, rather than trepidation and nervousness about…

I probably sound like a broken record if you’ve been reading my Publisher’s letters for as long as I have been writing them. I’m not much of a New Year’s resolution kinda guy. In saying that, the start of another year does give you a sense of a new beginning and renewed hope that the year ahead can be better than the previous one. We all aspire to bigger and better things, but simply aspiring isn’t going to make it happen. Without action we are unfortunately just a head full of thoughts. Recent research, conducted by UCT’s Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine on OptiFit’s 10km programme, found it to be extremely safe and scientific with members reaching their goal with no muscle damage or pain. The course includes three sessions a week where you are trained by caring sports scientists or biokineticists – who are themselves runners. These sessions will help you master the skills and gain confidence to run a half-marathon. Useful tips about running gear, groups to train with and events on the calendar…

“I BELIEVE THERE’S AN INNER POWER THAT MAKES WINNERS OR LOSERS, AND THE WINNERS ARE THE ONES WHO REALLY LISTEN TO THE TRUTH OF THEIR HEARTS.”– SYLVESTER STALLONE LORE OF NUTRITION By Tim Noakes & Marika Sboros In December 2010, Professor Tim Noakes was introduced to the low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) lifestyle, which was contrary to what he had been taught and was accepted as conventional nutrition ‘wisdom’. After intensive research and first-hand experience, he revealed his findings in 2012. Now, in Lore of Nutrition, he explains the science behind the LCHF/ Banting diet, and why he champions it, despite the constant persecution. He also discusses the medical and scientific code of silence that discourages anyone from speaking out against the current dietary guidelines. R290 ENDURE: MIND, BODY, AND THE CURIOUSLY ELASTIC LIMITS OF HUMAN PERFORMANCE…
