dealing with disappointment

Six months, 2,067.13km, and 168h08m43s. That’s what I invested into training for the 2017 Comrades marathon. It’s more training than most, but far from the upper end of what many serious runners dedicate to achieving their goal. From a personal perspective, though, it was a huge commitment that took me away from my family and friends and required many sacrifices. It was, however, the most consistent and beneficial six months of training in my life. I was in the shape of my life and had done everything right up to that point – I’d been conservative on long runs, with high-quality speed and hill training. By all accounts I had a sub-7h30 Comrades marathon and that coveted Silver medal in my sights. It all seemed to be coming together perfectly…

train smarter, not harder

I’m not much of a winter person. Priority number one around this time of year is always just trying to maintain some kind of healthy medium while training. Training through winter, keeping healthy and trying to make progress is tough, unless you’ve got an immune system like a bank vault – which I certainly don’t. “It’s impossible to walk into the gym each and every day and push harder than the workout before. You’re not a machine, and even if you were, even machines require maintenance.” I’m also not much of a patient person, but one thing winter sure teaches you is patience. Always put yourself first and don’t jeopardise your health simply because you refused to let the winter bugs slow you down. Sometimes it’s better to see winter as a…

QUANTIFIED SELF AWARENESS A team of researchers led by geneticist Michael Snyder at Stanford has demonstrated how wearable fitness tracking devices that measure and record metrics such as activity level, heart rate and sleep patterns, can reveal personalised circadian rhythms, track changes in specific environments such as airplane cabins during flight, and can be combined with biosensor information with medical measurements to help detect early signs of ill-health. The two-year study, which Snyder was part of, along with an additional 60 volunteers, helped the research team develop a computational algorithm that can analyse signals from various devices to reveal very early signs of disease, including differences in insulin sensitivity, which may help diagnose type 2 diabetes. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY WERE PUBLISHED ONLINE IN PLOS BIOLOGY. LOCAL TRAINER DEVELOPS ALL TERRAIN SLED Personal…
