got grit?

The dictionary definition of grit (n) is - ‘courage and resolve; strength of character.’ I don’t think that definition does this powerful personality trait justice, though. In my line of work I get to meet and speak to many outstanding people who have achieved many amazing feats, whether it be reaching the pinnacle of their sport, or achieving their physical or physique oriented goals. Over the years these interactions have helped to distill the character traits and attitudes shared by these successful people, and the overriding attribute shared by them all is best described as ‘grit’. This type of grit is more than just courage and resolve. It runs much deeper. It’s what drives them to succeed in the face of adversity. It shapes their perceptions of challenges, and reframes their vocabulary,…

time to take time out

When we started building this company over 14 years ago, I quickly lost count of how many sunrises I watched from whatever office park we were in at the time. We used to pull a few all-nighters on deadline, doing whatever it took to get the job done and get the mags printed and on shelf. Fast forward to today and much has changed. I no longer have to watch the sun rise over the office park, even though the workload has increased significantly, because our staff compliment has increased in relation to the volume of content we publish, both in the mags and online. We’ve also worked tirelessly to instil an entrepreneurial mindset in the company where we believe in getting things done now instead of later. While this is a…

TECHNOLOGY LOWERS LEVELS OF PERCEIVED EXERTION A research team led by Jinger Gottschall, associate professor at Penn State University, found that adding visual effects to a structured workout creates an “immersive” fitness experience that increases satisfaction and lowers the rate of perceived exertion for beginners. The study, which was published in the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise journal and presented at the American College of Sports Medicine 2017 Annual Conference, demonstrates that “immersive classes are ideal group fitness environments for newcomers to achieve their fitness goals because they reach a high heart rate zone to get fitter, faster, without feeling the discomfort of the intensity level.” Les Mills International funded this research study. 7-8 NOV FIBO BUSINESS SUMMIT AFRICA B2B Conference & Expo Discover the latest innovations and trends in the global health…

“SIGNALLING PATHWAYS THAT GOVERN SKELETAL MUSCLE MASS INCLUDE THE MYOSTATIN, MTOR, FOXO, NF- Κ B, MAPK AND β -CATENIN PATHWAYS.” “A POSITIVE LEUCINE BALANCE IS CONSISTENT WITH A STATE OF ANABOLISM.” Q What happens to my muscle tissue after a heavy weight training session if I don’t consume enough protein? Robert A There is delicate balance that exists in your body that works to repair and rebuild muscle tissue following the damage caused by physical activity of any kind. Weight training is, of course, one of the more extreme forms of damage-inducing activities. To explain it as simply as possible, the forceful contractions or mechanical loading associated with heavy weight lifting literally tears muscle fibres. This breakdown, also known as catabolism, includes the physical separation of the fibres that comprise the muscle structure…
