My daughter loves potatoes, so with that in mind – plus nostalgia around a cool kids’ book called The Potato People, and something Tino Carnevale said to me about how once you plant potatoes, they keep coming up (I love a plant that keeps on giving) and most of all, the memory of how Peter Cundall surrendered his lawn to grow them – I planted some spuds last winter. They were easy and fun. They worked. And because I didn’t dig them all up, they did exactly what Tino said they would, and sprouted again this year. If you love lavender and are looking for something a bit different for your garden, consider the newly released Lavandula pedunculata ‘The Queen’. Bred by Plant Growers Australia, this beautiful lavender has deep burgundy flowers topped with wavy pink bracts that look like butterfly wings and complement the fragrant silver foliage. ‘The Queen’ performs best in a spot that receives full sun and has good drainage. It tolerates heat and cold, and does well in dry spells, but needs a good watering during long periods without rain. This compact plant grows to 60cm high by 90cm wide, which makes it an ideal choice for low borders and containers. Removing spent flowers will encourage repeat flowering after its spring flush. pma.com.au Vita Sackville-West’s White Garden at Sissinghurst Castle in the UK inspired many gardeners…

With lucerne-based Power Pellets, you can avoid the pungent odour that comes from fertilisers based on animal manure. Lucerne mulch used on its own provides nitrogen as it breaks down, however Power Pellets have added rock minerals and amino acids to feed the soil, which in turn feeds your plants for up to three months. The pellets are suitable for all types of indoor and outdoor plants, including phosphorus-sensitive Australian natives. Winner of an AusIndustry Award for Innovation, Power Pellets are 100 per cent organic-certified. powerpellets.com.au Are you avoiding gardening because you’re finding it difficult to get up after weeding or planting?
