lessons from scotland

Author Tom Coyne is a pretty darned good golfer. In preparation for his 107-course pilgrimage across England, Wales and Scotland to gather the goods for his new book A Course Called Scotland (see our review on page 64), he grinded his way to a scratch handicap so he could enter an Open Championship qualifier at the end of his trek. You’ll have to pick up the book to find out how Coyne fared against his fellow Open dreamers, but in the meantime I can tell you that besides following his every footstep on the United Kingdom’s greatest links courses — from Littlestone Golf Club on the English Channel to Whalsay Golf Club way up north in the Shetland Islands — we pick up some valuable tips on how to play links…

spray your way to more power

One of the biggest power leaks in a golf swing is not contacting the ball on the center of the club face. A great way to practice dialing your shots in, is to use foot spray. 1. Purchase a can of foot spray at your local pharmacy.2. Hold the can at least one foot away from the face of your driver.3. Spray a light mist over the face of the driver.4. Hit a golf shot and then inspect of the face of the driver. You will see an impact mark on your club face. It will tell you if you are hitting the ball too high on the face, too low, or too close to the toe or heel. You can lose 20-plus yards by not hitting the center of the…

smooth out those rough lies

The first objective off the tee is hitting the fairway, but even the pros miss their share of short grass. It’s then that their expertise at “reading” the resulting lie kicks in, and they find a way to a better spot … or, hopefully, the green. You can be an expert, too. Properly reading how a golf ball has come to rest in the rough, whether in the full swing or short game, is critical to scoring well. The critical points to consider are: Will the lie allow me to take my normal set-up and swing, or do I need to make adjustments to one or both? Also, you will need to consider how will these adjustments affect the ball flight. • Will the ball come out faster or slower than normal?• Will it…

start them   young

“IS MY CHILD GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY TOURNAMENTS?” That’s a very common question that I get on a weekly basis. I usually follow the parent’s question with one of my own: “What does your child want to do?” It is very important to talk with your child first and get their perspective on things. Supporting how he or she feels is the number one priority. Pushing your child to be in a situation he is not ready or not willing to be in can result in both a negative outcome and a unreliable relationship between you and your child. She looks to you for support and guidance first. In order for children to feel ready and comfortable to play, they need to understand some basics of course management, setting their personal par,…

divot   then   pivot

I can honestly say this one is “Original TP.” I tell all my students if I could give them two skills for Christmas, they would be the ability to compress/hit down on the golf ball and the ability to pivot the body without interruption through the impact area. Let’s talk “down” first: the ability to allow (not cause) the arms and golf club to fall down plane. I always refer to one of the great teaching professionals of all time as Isaac Newton. Remember that gravity thing? Wonderful thing about gravity — it always falls DOWN! Never falls up, in, or outward. It’s amazingly consistent both in its direction as well as speed. If I proposed to hold a golf club the height of the top of your backswing as I had…
