Penning this month’s longterm test on the ES-330 I picked up recently, I was struck again by the fact that, when choosing gear, so many players leave the most important factor out of the equation when deciding what gear they should buy next: themself. It’s very easy to think of musical instruments as if they do all the work of generating your tone – and you merely input notes. But the truth is, of course, that your tone is how your gear sounds when you are playing it, not the demonstrator in the shop or the star endorsee on YouTube. For example, some players have a very confident, precise style that calls for an amp with a fair bit of clarity and headroom, such as a Fender Twin, to show their…

Eric ‘Smitty’ Smid started playing guitar in his teens during the mid-70s, inspired by discovering the late Jimi Hendrix. He started his nickname-based custom guitar company nearly a decade ago: based in Nieuw-Vennep, a few kilometres south west of Amsterdam, Eric builds primarily bolt-ons with the occasional set-neck design, with the help of his son. “I’m more of a ‘Fender’ guy,” he tells us. “It’s always been Strats and Teles that were my first guitars. Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Stevie Ray Vaughan…” Unsurprisingly, the Strat- and Tele-based Smitty Classics are very popular. “I could build those forever,” he tells us, “but I always have my own creations – I like to put my own creativity into my own models.” Along with those Classics, Eric currently offers four original outlines, which can be…

Based in the electric guitar hotspot of South Cambridgeshire, Hamstead Soundworks has steadily been gaining worldwide recognition for its superb handmade amps and pedals over the last few years, ever since the launch of the Artist 20RT, a single-channel boutique design. The brand has its own cult following and a select user list, including James Bay and Carl Verheyen, alongside hardworking session pros such as Adam Goldsmith and Neil Cowlan. Now, a new amp in the catalogue promises to take the Hamstead sound to new heights: the Artist 60+RT. This latest addition certainly stays true to the Hamstead ethos, with superb build quality using top-grade materials. The cabinet dimensions are slightly taller and deeper than average, but slim plywood panels and an aluminium chassis balance the visuals, while helping to keep…
