in the footsteps of giants

This month, myself, Nev Marten, Editor of Guitar Techniques and Mick Taylor of That Pedal Show had the pleasure of performing some of Cream’s greatest tracks at Bristol’s annual Jazz & Blues Festival, in honour of the 50th anniversary of the band’s farewell in 1968. Aside from the exhilaration of playing such classic material to a room full of Cream fans who cheered us on in a very generous spirit, everyone in the band remarked on what an interesting journey it had been musically, too. One of the most surprising things was which songs generated the most power and excitement on stage. Sometimes it was obvious hits like I Feel Free but quite often the tracks that really hit home were deep cuts like Deserted Cities Of The Heart. Far…

a perfect storm

PRS SILVER SKY £2,695 WHAT IS IT? PRS’s take – and a very good one thanks to John Mayer – on a vintage-style Fender Stratocaster Oh dear, oh dear. What on earth has happened here? Over the past couple of years there has been endless speculation on what the first unlimited (and affordable) collaboration between Paul Reed Smith and John Mayer would bring. Mayer has been posting videos of what appeared to be a Stratocaster with the ‘wrong’ headstock, while PRS has steadfastly refused to comment. Well, the wait is over and the guitar is here, officially the PRS Silver Sky John Mayer Signature. But to the rest of the world, it’s a Stratocaster with the ‘wrong’ headstock, isn’t it? Now, PRS certainly isn’t the only maker to appropriate Fender’s finest moment: numerous…

FENDER ERIC JOHNSON THINLINE STRATOCASTER £2,019 WHAT IS IT? Signature guitar with single f-hole on a capped alder body, sound chambers and redesigned soft V profile quarter sawn neck When Eric Johnson lends his weight to a revamp of the planet’s most famous electric guitar, the six-string world takes notice. With Fender itself as his co-conspirator this is the Texan virtuoso’s third tweak of his favourite musical tool, and one that led to the company’s first semi-hollow Stratocaster with full body contouring and vintage vibrato system. Renowned tone-hound Eric was looking to create a lightweight instrument that offered a subtle but distinctively different voice to that of a conventional Strat. Johnson was inspired by his love of the Gibson ES-335 with its markedly more dynamic range when compared to the electronically similar Les…

BOSS KATANA 100/212 COMBO £449 WHAT IS IT? Digital modelling combo combining snappy looks with practical controls, great tone and very affordable pricing. Now with expanded tones Roland broke with tradition just over a year ago when they unveiled their Katana range of amplifiers and the extraordinary Waza Craft head, using the Boss brand for amplification for the first time. We were, and still are, mightily impressed with the Katana range, which puts next-generation digital modelling technology into an approachable and surprisingly affordable package. The Katana amps have recently benefitted from a free firmware update, with new effects and functions, so it’s high time we took another look, this time at the largest combo, the 100-watt Katana 100/212. The Katanas have simple but smart cosmetics, with black vinyl, white piping and a silver…

vigier excalibur doublebfoot signature £3,995

CONTACT HIGH TECH DISTRIBUTION PHONE 01722 410002 WEB www.vigier.co.uk WHILE IT SEEMS the majority of modern guitar makers are happiest wallowing in their past glories – or indeed those of others – Vigier has always been different. Since the French company opened their doors back in 1980, “vive la différence” has been their mantra. It’s exemplified by this rarely seen double neck (originally introduced in 2013) that World Guitars kindly sent us to ogle. Far from the sort of guitar you want to be handed at your local blues jam, its more standard fretted six-string neck, with Floyd Rose double locking vibrato, is married to a hard-tail fretless neck, the fingerboard of which is crafted from ‘iMetal’. Previously known as ‘delta metal’ – which, says Vigier, makes for “uncompromising sustain, tone and…

the holy grail guitar show

For an event that was founded in order to showcase and celebrate the guitar-building community worldwide, the Holy Grail Guitar Show in Berlin is now more important than ever for an industry that’s facing new challenges – namely the recent CITES regulations on rosewood (that sees a restriction on its import). We spoke to Mike Hembury about this year’s show and the challenges currently facing luthiers. The show is now in its fourth year, did you want to change anything for 2018? “It has proven to be a good format and we’re happy with the response from the public and from the exhibitors, so we’re focusing on improving and expanding the offerings. We’ve learned new things with every show and this flowed into the organisation of this year’s show. Last year’s highlight,…
