taking a stand

In the mythology of magazines, the September issue has particular resonance, for it marks the start of a forward-thinking new season, in a similar way to the beginning of an academic year. Yet thanks to the determination of our cover star Cameron Russell, the world of fashion has been undergoing a more profound change, ever since she started her campaign against sexual harassment and abuse in the industry last October. The importance of her leadership – on social media and elsewhere – cannot be over-estimated; for she has used her global success as a model to provide a platform for the stories of others (men and women) who had previously felt too frightened or ashamed to share their own experiences. As a consequence, several of the most powerful corporations have…

CAMERON RUSSELL As well as juggling her modelling career with life as a new mother (to her baby son Asa, who also appears in our cover shoot, right; page 222), Russell is a powerful activist, leading the campaign against sexual abuse in the fashion industry. Elegance is… ‘redwood-trees. I went hiking last month and looked up at these towering giants. I hadn’t realised what elegance was until that moment.’ A fashion designer you would like to meet ‘Rei Kawakubo, because I admire her seemingly uninhibited creative spirit.’ Your personal style icon ‘My grandma and my mother, who both love textiles and making their own clothing.’ A poem that inspires you …poetry isn’t revolution but a way of knowing why it must come ‘DREAMWOOD’ BY ADRIENNE RICH ‘Rich is one of the people who helped me…

10 things we love

1 THE HERITAGE COAT Trusty tweeds lose their fusty reputation this season: Anthony Vaccarello’s take on the trend at Saint Laurent is anything but reverential. 2 THE CHAIN - STRAP BAG From Balenciaga to Valentino and everywhere in-between, this classic once again tops the It Bag index. 3 THE DISCO BOOTS Low-key these are not. But could there be an easier route to uber-glamour? 4 THE EVENING SKIRT Sleek, slim and simply the last word in after-dark elegance… 5 THE MATCHING EARRINGS …because after seasons of mixing up your jewellery, it only takes a styling twist to update everything. 6 THE FRINGED DRESS Trailing tentacles edge the skirt of this simple, sculptural piece: a new way for minimalists to embrace embellishment. 7 THE REWORKED SHIRT Proposing the white shirt as an eveningwear hero piece: make it oversize, belted, fringed or anything but basic. 8…

my moodboard

Once again, Maria Grazia Chiuri placed the counterculture centre-stage for Dior A/W 18. Surrounded by empowering slogans, magazine covers and placards, her models marched wearing patchwork motifs, peace signs and flower-power dresses that recalled the 1960s ‘youthquake’ – a term coined by Bazaar’s former fashion editor Diana Vreeland. This idea resonates with Chiuri, especially in the 50th-anniversary year of the Paris student protests in 1968. Her moodboard is an ode to the era and the fight for women’s liberation. As it happens, this was also the year that Marc Bohan launched the house’s first ready-to-wear line. And although the collection looked to the past for inspiration, its resonance with today’s resurgent feminism made it feel utterly contemporary.…
