I am writing this letter the morning after our new-look Design Awards event at Somerset House. In place of the traditional ceremony, we created an immersive installation celebrating our 19 winners, a pick of people, projects and products. It was a great evening; known names were celebrated, new faces were unearthed. I am delighted by the talent the judges identified. Discover our 2019 stars on page 68 of this issue. Also this week, I hosted a wallpaper workshop at the V&A with historian Joanna Banham and interior designer Nicole Salvesen. We started the afternoon with an overview of wallpaper since 1509; the earliest surviving fragment of European wallpaper, found in Christ’s College Cambridge, dates from this year. It was made by Hugo Goes of York and has a damask-style pomegranate design.…

TREASURE TROVE A never-ending search for the extraordinary and the beautiful led Tiffany Duggan, founder of interior design practice Studio Duggan, to launch her own home and lifestyle brand, TROVE. The debut bedroom collection moves seamlessly from different eras and styles, and includes frilled and brush-fringed cushions, the Gustav three-drawer chest, from £1,650, and Yves headboard, from £820, all in a muted and restful palette. COLOUR STORY Burnt Toast, Silver Polish and Nicotine (shown) are among the evocative names that reference everyday ephemera in the new paint range by Plain English, in collaboration with interior designer Rita Konig. The 12 colours, from soft neutrals to warm reds and darks, come in finishes for walls, furniture and cabinetry. ART FOR HIRE M.A.H Laura Fulmine is the name behind some of Homes & Gardens’ chicest trend shoots. As an interior stylist and creative director, she struggled to find unique fine art pieces for projects due to stringent copyright laws. This search led her to create M.A.H – Modern Art Hire, a collection of licensed artworks and sculptural pieces for exclusive hire, not only for shoots but your home or office too. M.A.H has an ever-changing rotation of artists and makers that can advise on interiors projects, and works of art will also be showcased in exhibitions at a gallery on London’s Vyner Street. modernarthire.com GLOBAL ART CLUB THE CULTIVIST With a single card you can glide through museums, galleries and art fairs without trouble or fuss, thanks to The Cultivist, the world’s first global…

one to watch

Q Were you a creative child? I was very sporty growing up and obsessed with horses, which meant I didn’t have much time for artistic pursuits. As I got older, I developed a passion for fashion and that’s where my creativity began to flourish. I’d spend my winnings from competing at show jumping on my wardrobe! My parents have great taste and encouraged self-expression. They both have great style. € Q Tell us about your first interior design job? I worked for several interior designers before striking out on my own. My first solo project was a country estate and guest villas in Ibiza. It was a huge undertaking, but the client trusted my vision and had faith in me. I had total creative freedom, which was the dream for a first project. Q…

escape the city

For antiques dealer and furniture restorer Jonathan Burden, the weekly escape from New York is a vital aspect of his lifestyle. On Friday evenings, he makes the journey to the Hamptons, where he takes the Greenport ferry, arriving at Shelter Island to join his wife JJ, a costume designer, and daughters, Ophelia, 13, and Florence, 11, at their weekend farmhouse. While taking regular holiday rentals nearby on the island, Jonathan had watched the house with interest for many years before acquiring it. ‘It seemed as if no-one was ever there,’ he says. ‘We left notes on the doorstep asking the owners to contact us if they were ever to sell but we never heard from them.’ But two years later, the call came that was to change the Burden family’s future.…
