editor’s note

The architectural elements of a house may come with many practical considerations but that doesn’t stop design experts from wanting to work around them in order to create a unique space. A case in point is a couple who wanted to build a home in Niseko, Hokkaido, that eschewed all the typical boxy abodes in the area that were deemed more practical for a ski destination. The couple worked with a team of professionals to create a light-filled luxury residence complete with floorto- ceiling windows, skylights, terraces and an indoor pool (p.58). Another home in Double Bay, Sydney, features a lower level that is completely transparent, blurring the lines between the indoor and outdoor areas and allowing the occupants to soak in the stunning views of the harbour (p.48). Designer André…

ATTACHMENT ISSUES It’s easy to see why Minotti’s Tape collection of seats is so named: each piece features design elements stuck onto it, the brainchild of Oki Sato, founder and director of Japanese design studio Nendo and self-professed design addict. The collection, which features an armchair with or without armrests, a lounge armchair, a bergère, two and three seater sofas as well as an ottoman, showcases Nendo’s paredback aesthetic and elegant palette, and its gentle subversion of the status quo, with the supporting legs placed outside the structure instead of hidden underneath. Available at Andante. minotti.com; andante.com.hk Mix and Match Sometimes the height of luxury lies in a furniture piece’s functionality—specifically its capacity for versatility and customisation. From German kitchen designer Bulthaup’s b Solitaire collection, this range of self-standing shelves combines an industrial…

AMANDE EXQUISE BY DIPTYQUE In addition to almond, the scent also includes tonka bean—an ingredient from South America that gives off a warm fragrance resembling a mixture of cinnamon, cloves and vanilla. WHITE MOSS & SNOWDROP BY JO MALONE Snowflakes falling on winter greenery makes for an enchanting tableau—and Jo Malone has managed to contain it all in a candle and a cologne that contain notes of snowdrops, moss, golden amber and cardamom. NAZARETH BY CIRE TRUDON It’s gold coloured, it’s named Nazareth and has a delicious fragrance featuring notes of orange, cardamom, cloves and cinnamon. Christmas summed up in a beautiful jar. CHAI BY BYREDO Swedish luxury house Byredo’s newest candle, Chai, takes its cue from India, the homeland of founder Ben Gorham’s mother, and its spicy masala chai tea. The candle blends an array of…

Online contemporary Asian art resource The Artling has partnered with Pun + Projects for the first time to curate and showcase a number of exclusive collections under the heading Collectible Design. They ran as an exhibition in October, and items from them are still on sale on The Artling’s site. Among the distinctive objects are “dysfunctional ceramics” by Delhi-based Claymen, woven works by Thai firm Patapian and deceptively simple designs from Japan’s Kazunaga Sakashita. Hong Kong design duo Lim + Lu are known for their colourful geometric furniture, which won them recognition last year as a Rising Asian Talent at the Paris edition of trade fair Maison + Objet. For The Artling’s exhibition, founders Vincent Lim and Elaine Lu contributed their signature Mondrianstyle Frame table, a modular piece that features a…

LA CRÈME Clé de Peau Beauté’s holiday collection for 2018 includes its iconic moisturiser repackaged in a sparkling jar in an alluring shade of pink, matched with a box decorated with fantastical imagery by Italian illustrator Daria Petrilli. Both the jar and box are so pretty, you won’t want to throw them away even after the mosituriser, formulated using the brand’s Illuminating Complex Ex to combat ageing, is long gone. CRÈME DE LA MER This famous moisturiser from La Mer owes its legendary formula to the brand’s patented Miracle Broth, and that coveted ingredient now has its own personification, in the form of exclusive character Little Miss Miracle. Part of the Mr Men and Little Miss series of children’s characters originally created by English illustrator and author Roger Hargreaves, she makes her debut…

1,001 NIGHTS BY KAY NIELSEN TASCHEN Once upon a time—more than a century ago, in fact—revered Danish artist Kay Nielsen created a set of beautiful illustrations for a grand colour version of much-loved collection of folk tales One Thousand and One Nights. Sadly, in the cash-strapped Europe of that era, the works were never released and they didn’t surface in public until the 1970s, following Nielsen’s death in 1957. Now, however, these stunning illustrations have been reproduced in five colours, including gold. The beautifully decorated box contains prints you’ll want to frame and hang on your wall as soon as you lay eyes on them. All of the striking illustrations that Nielsen—who, after the end of World War I, moved to the US to work for Disney (if you’re a fan of 1920s…
