sonia’s way

STANDING TALL Sonia Cheng, CEO of the Rosewood Hotel Group, welcomed us inside the brand’s spectacular new Hong Kong property (PHOTOGRAPHY: CALLAGHAN WALSH) I remember bumping into this month’s cover star, Sonia Cheng, at the beach a few months ago. She had set up a small table in the shade and was selling homemade lemonade with her children. “$10 a cup—all proceeds to charity,” said a handwritten sign taped to the front.Fresh-faced and without a scrap of make-up, dressed in laid-back weekend wear and with her hair pulled back in a lazy ponytail, Sonia laughed and joked with passersby as they stopped for a thirst quencher. As I sipped mine I remember thinking how refreshing it was—not just the lemonade, but the sight of the CEO of the…

Our cover stars assemble on Rosewood Hong Kong’s curvaceous central staircase, which is carved from limestone As the CEO of the Rosewood Hotel Group, Sonia Cheng is very much responsible for the hotel brand’s big-thinking long-term vision—as well as for the brand’s rapid growth over the past few years. But when it came to our cover shoot celebrating the opening of the Rosewood Hong Kong, an ultra-luxury hotel on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, she wanted to share the spotlight with leading members of the creative team that brought her vision to life. “This hotel is a collaborative effort,” she said on set.So this month’s cover features not one but eight stars: Sonia; Marc Brugger, managing director of the hotel; Waldo Hernandez, chief concierge; Karina Wan, director of…

CALLAGHAN WALSH The Australian photographer captured hotel magnate Sonia Cheng and her talented team in the new Rosewood Hong Kong for this month’s cover story (p.106) What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve done? My second date with my now wife involved an impromptu flight to Bali. We are now married and living in Bali, so I guess it worked. What are two items on your bucket list? My wife has a travel agency, Lightfoot Travel, so we are fortunate to travel often, but I would like to take my camera to a location really off the beaten track to shoot with no agenda. Living in Indonesia, it would be incredible to shoot the untouched western archipelagos. Second, I have two young sons and I’d like to take them…
