In this special Eid al-Fitr edition, politician and women’s rights activist Yenny Wahid, the second daughter of the late Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid, talks about family traditions and raising her children in the Islamic faith. On the cover are filmmaker Zhang Ziyi and Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele. Zhang, recently named a global ambassador for the jewellery brand, tells of becoming the first mentor from Asia to lead Cannes Cinema Masterclass activities. The issue gives a nod to World Environment Day by introducing eco-conscious couples—Zatashah and Aubry Mennesson, and Melissa and Daryl Foong—who talk about their green activism and how they are changing the way they operate their businesses. For architects Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell, good design should be human-centric and improve our collective well-being. The founding directors of…

The question of whether it’s acceptable to buy art online has been a topic of great debate, one on which we’ve asked and heard a variety of opinions, and one about which our cover star, Shanyan Koder, feels very passionately. The art aficionado, whose eclectic and extensive collection ranges from Degas to Damien Hirst, has made significant online purchases for years, and is encouraging everyone to do so. In fact, Shanyan, the daughter of Canning Fok, is doubling down on digital by converting her Hua Gallery, which represents emerging Chinese artists, from bricks and mortar into an online-only platform. She’s also taking her digital immersion to new heights with the launch of a highly exclusive app called Global Showcases. Meet this innovative trailblazer and discover her strategy for transforming the art…

bathtime and blockchain

There are jetsetters and then there’s Shanyan Koder, who arrived on a flight from London on the eve of our cover shoot—and then headed back to the airport hours after our session ended for the journey home. In the 24 or so hours the art collector and gallerist was here, she was game for whatever we wanted her to do, or rather whatever we wanted to do to her, which was mostly just her hair and make-up, but also having her don skintight Ralph Lauren for some bath-time fun. Doesn’t sound that tough, but you try taking a bath with 15 people in the room taking photos of you. Before frolicking in the tub, Shanyan was rather more serious, telling how she intends to drive the art world into the digital…

CHRISTINA KO The Hong Kong-based journalist meets art collector and entrepreneur Shanyan Koder in Virtual Visionary (p.94) Mindfulness means… Staring into space instead of at the TV while I eat my Deliveroo. What’s your most important takeaway from your interview with Shanyan Koder? The art world is going digital, whether it wants to or not. Where are you planning to go for summer and why? A road trip through the US so I can visit landmarks like Prada Marfa and the Flintstones’ Bedrock City, and hopefully stay in a motel room with a giant heart-shaped tub. What are you reading and what do you like about it? Death in Midsummer by Yukio Mishima, which is heartbreakingly beautiful but also makes you want to commit suicide—in painful slow motion. Your fantasy dinner guest is… Sailor Moon, because nobody is cooler than Sailor Moon. RICKY…
