hello!

In February, as Hallmark would have it, our minds turn to love. Well, I’m just going to come out with it: I love Drew Barrymore. I’m hardly unusual—I think we all do. Love, warmth, and spirit have been trademarks of Drew’s more than 35 years in the spotlight. For this cover, I had a mad idea. Last year I noticed that Drew was Instagramming the cleaning-out of her storage unit in Los Angeles. You see, my fantasy was that her storage unit was unlike the rest of ours (ETs! Everywhere!). Well, it wasn’t quite like that. I emailed Drew and asked if exploring remnants of her past life would be a great concept for a cover shoot. “That’s so cool, but I don’t really have that much stuff,” was her reply. But…

Go away, I am busy! #saturdaynightplans #saturdaynight —@DIARYOFA YORKIE IN THE DETAILS I have been an InStyle subscriber for at least 10 years and have enjoyed your magazine all along. But in the October issue, there were pages of cute boots (“Kick It!”), jackets, jeans, and more to purchase yet no content on how to put them together. Please bring back those “how to wear it” segments so we can all continue being “in style.” —TIFFANY KLEIN, Oakland, Calif. Hi, Tiffany. Thanks…

the cover

COVER CREDITS Dress Céline. Photographed for InStyle by Anthony Maule. Styled by Catherine Newell-Hanson. Hair: Marki Shkreli. Makeup: Fulvia Farolfi. Manicure: Casey Herman. Fresh out of her morning yoga class, Drew Barrymore arrived at our New York City set in late November, ready to take a trip down memory lane. The plan was to re-create seven iconic photos from Barrymore’s childhood, and she was downright delighted to channel her ’80s self. Case in point: She went so far as to engage in an animated (albeit one-sided) conversation with a Mr. T doll, reenacting a moment she shared with the actual mohawked legend in 1984 (see p. 104). Between takes, Barrymore sipped white wine and gushed over the racks of sequined clothing as her iPhone blasted an eclectic playlist featuring Taylor Swift, Fiona…
