Last summer, President Trump announced a ban on transgender people in the military. It was then, as it is now, both nonsensical and prejudicial. After I heard the news, I was furious, so I asked my features team to find a transgender woman serving in the military and profile her for the magazine. My editors wanted to focus on a U.S. Army captain named, yes, Jennifer Peace. Peace joined the military when she was 19 and has served our country for 13 years. She is a married mother of three and has participated in every war of her generation. When I learned about Peace and saw pictures of her on duty and with her young family, the first thing I thought was, “Damn, what a badass.” With that, we decided to launch…

For the new mom and 23-time Grand Slam champion, downtime comes in small doses. Fortunately, Williams’s athletic prowess means she knows how to power through. Case in point: On the morning of our Palm Beach shoot, Williams arrived fresh from four hours of tennis practice and went straight into hair and makeup, weighing in enthusiastically on the day’s glam. “Serena is easygoing, but she also really cares about the final result,” says hairstylist Angela Meadows. Once Williams was camera-ready, she made a beeline for the clothing racks and quickly found some keepers (she even ordered multiple pieces directly from our set, including the leopard-print look,…

pretty pennies

WELL AGED Denim-centric label Current/Elliott débuts a core collection of jeans treated to mimic three levels of real-life wear and tear: zero years worn (a clean dark wash), one year worn (gently distressed), and two years worn (thrift-store perfection). ROCK CANDY For designer Jonathan Simkhai’s fall 2018 runway show, jeweler Ileana Makri created a series of sculptural accents (as part of her Eye M by Ileana Makri collection) that meld earthy gemstones with molten-metal-like settings. TAKING THE PLUNGE Vivian and Edward get the Broadway treatment when Pretty Woman: The Musical opens on August 16, bringing the final passion project of the film’s late director, Garry Marshall, to life. Needless to say, missing this pop-culture moment would be a big mistake. Big. Huge. SPOTTED This summer’s best reason to book a trip to a fancy resort: Beachy Brazilian…

badass women of fashion

There’s no denying an incredible moment of change is happening in fashion, as a new generation of designers, models, and photographers arrives with a mission to challenge the status quo. But even as strides are being made regarding diversity and inclusion, one problem persists at the very top, where few women hold positions of power. The majority of luxury women’s brands are designed by men, and only 14 percent of major brands have a woman as CEO, according to a CFDA report in May. So in keeping with this issue’s theme of Badass Women, we are celebrating those innovative and entrepreneurial spirits whose actions and words are inspiring nothing short of a revolution. One commonality among so many originals featured here is a sense of fearlessness when it comes to getting down…

zoë saldana

HER BEST EVER Feathered ball gowns, minimalist sheaths, plunging jumpsuits—Saldana certainly likes to keep us guessing. And though the silhouettes may change, her keen eye for detail has made her one to watch over the past decade. “Zoë gravitates toward looks that are bold and artistic,” says stylist Petra Flannery, who adds that Saldana is loving anything menswear these days. “She’s open-minded, and that’s what allows for great fashion moments to happen.” HER BEST! After spotting this Givenchy look at the couture collections, Flannery knew it would strike the right balance for the SAG Awards. “The shape was effortless, but combined with the incredible beading down to the hem, the gown was a work of art,” she says. “It was magical on Zoë.”…
