editor’s note

Connect with the knitscene team and our other knitting titles at www.interweave.com. The best knitting patterns are the ones that catch you off guard. There is nothing I love more than being surprised by a design element or technique that teaches or shows me something I didn’t expect. Even simple designs can feature elements that make you look a little closer, and that’s what this Winter 2018 issue of knitscene is all about. To be honest with you, the themes in this issue were inspired by frustration. Let’s not focus on that part, though, because what came out of it is a beautiful collection that took on a life of its own. 1. THE CURSE OF THE BOYFRIEND SWEATER: Essays on Crafting by Alanna Okun The Curse of the Boyfriend Sweater is an important read celebrating our mutual love for craft. Alanna Okun is hilarious (we’ve never been so excited to read footnotes) and relatable. Her writing is so open and personal that reading these essays feels like reading letters from a dear friend. This is a perfect bedside or knitting-nook-adjacent book for those much-needed inspiration breaks. www.flatironbooks.com 2. HOW TO BE A CRAFTIVIST: The Art of Gentle Protest by Sarah Corbett Sometimes, quiet action and speech can be just as powerful as the loudest voice. Sarah Corbett, founder of the Craftivist Collective, gives us a book to inspire critical thinking and gives crafters tools to speak out in a beautiful and loving way. How…

oink pigments

Pigs and puns—those are the two words that triggered the branding of an American-made yarn-dyeing business. Helena, Alexa, and Julie of Oink Pigments came together as friends and fiber lovers and became business partners who have a love for pigs and puns. When the trio started their business, they established that it was important to keep their product made in America—from sheep to shelf—as much as possible. Most of the fiber farms and all of the mills they work with are in the United States. There are a few fibers that they have to source from other countries. “Silk has been cultivated in China for thousands and thousands of years, and they’ve really perfected the art of breeding those little magic worms. U.S.-grown silk is nearly impossible to find, very expensive,…

six armholes and how to make them work for your body

The basic concept here is this: The bigger the difference between your bust and your shoulders, the more tailoring you need in the body along the armhole edges. If your bust is busty, you need a pyramid or a cone sweater type (see the infographic below) because you need a sweater that narrows from bust to shoulder. Have you ever worn a button-up shirt that fit you oh-so-cute in the arms and back but gaped at the buttons on your chest? That’s because you’re wearing a rectangle that is small enough for your shoulders but too small for your bust. Convert that to a sweater and your only solution is to work heavy bust modification into the garment. As nice as that sounds on paper, it just doesn’t work for…
