‘Adventure is never far away’ Normally we do a lot of off-roading each month and that tends to bring its own share of incidents, but we seem to have been involved in more on-road shenanigans than normal this month. You can read about what happened to Martin on p94 (an incident that had the potential to end up far worse than it did; certainly if he hadn’t been in a Land Rover). Mine was when heavy rain and strong winds were battering the area. I was plodding along a road when the vehicles ahead of me pulled up sharply – a large branch had fallen across our side of the road, luckily missing the cars. People have said I’m mad to spend loads of money on a Discovery 2,’ admits Richard Canterbury, the owner of this fantastic vehicle. ‘They said, “You’ll never make your money back”, but I’ve not built it to sell; this is my vision of the ultimate Discovery.’ So, how much has he spent on it? ‘I can’t say in case my wife reads this,’ comes the reply. ‘Let’s just say it’s no expense spared!’ That’s obviously no small amount, then, and may seem strange given that they’re so cheap to buy. ‘It’s just the trouble with the way the D2 market has gone,’ explains Richard. ‘There are £1000 scrappers running round bashing into each other [at off-road sites]. sea-trial setback for defender

Disbelieving ferry passengers in the middle of the English Channel were recently met by the sight of a Defender 110. The Land Rover was undergoing a test run in preparation for an ambitious expedition dubbed ‘the last great overland adventure’. The Channel crossing had to be aborted, but the team will return. Their journey will involve driving two TDCi Defenders 18,000 miles from London to New York via the Bering Strait – following in the path of Sir Ranulph Fiennes’ aborted ‘Land Rover Global Expedition’ in the late 1990s. Team members Jeff Willner, Steve Brooks and Mikael Strandberg all have expedition experience. Ups and downs Despite a record 125,000 vehicles on order, Jaguar Land Rover made a loss in the most recent quarter due to ongoing semiconductor shortages hampering production. Defender sales during the period were up significantly to 16,725, higher than any other Land Rover. Who’s behind hydrogen? Ineos has confirmed that it will begin testing a hydrogen fuel cell in the Grenadier next year. To develop the technology, Ineos is partnering with powertrain specialist AVL, the same firm that’s helping Land Rover develop hydrogen fuel cell technology for the Defender. You’ve only got to look at the vehicles and the people to realise that the Camel Trophy is a very special event,’ says Nick Dimbleby, photographer and author of Camel Trophy – The Definitive History. ‘This book exists because of Covid; I wondered what I was going to do to fill the time during lockdown,’ says Nick, who photographed the last four Camel Trophy events from 1996 to 2000 and continues to work with Land Rover. He spent months talking to some of the event’s former competitors and organisers, starting with 1989 winner Bob Ives, who competed alongside his brother Joe in the Amazon.
