It’s always fall of 1954 on contributing editor Tony Koester’s HO scale Nickel Plate Road St. Louis Division. In this exclusive layout tour, Tony takes you along the main line from Frankfort, Ind., to Charleston, Ill. It’s the transition era, so you’ll see 2-8-4 Berkshire steam locomotives and first-generation diesels, such as Electro-Motive Division GP7s and Alco PAs. You’ll get insights into how Tony designed the layout to follow the prototype, learn the significance of various towns and other locations, and much more. You’ll see both close-up and overall shots of this inspirational multilevel model railroad. Click on the Layouts tab on the MRVP home page to see even more layout tours from all around the country. We’d like to say “welcome” if you’re just joining us, and we hope you’ll stick with us for a while. You might be new to the model railroading hobby, or just new to the magazine. Or, you may be coming back after some time away. Regardless of the circumstance, we hope you find information you can use, as well as a sense of community. East L.A. Station I really enjoyed “Plans for the East Los Angeles Station” by Bruce Briggs [October]. I was raised in East L.A., so the photos and article brought back many memories. I’ll probably never build a layout, since I belong to an HO club in Salinas, Calif., where I can run my locomotives on 1,200 feet of track, but I’ll save the article just in case. My grandfather was a Union Pacific engineer who retired at the same time steam locomotives were retired, so railroading has been in the family for three generations. Phyllis ClevelandCarmel, Calif. The East Los Angeles Station marked an important milestone in my parents’ lives. During World War II, my father was laid off his job at a factory that made air conditioners for submarines. Soon after, my mother’s sister…

How do I color a riverbed and tint water? Q I’m interested in creating a water scene on my layout, for which I recently purchased Magic Water, a two-part resin from Unreal Details. I’d been in a quandary about what type of paint to use to color the riverbed and how to tint the water. Then I found one of your Expert Tips videos, titled “How to make waves on modeled water.” I was intrigued by the color of the river bed and the water, but these techniques must have been described in a previous video I can’t locate. Could you let me know the types of paint and colors that were used to create the riverbed and tint the water? Thank you in advance. Bill Stafford, Elkton, Md. A When we built…
