One of the top reasons people remodel their kitchens has nothing to do with functionality and everything to do with looks. Quite simply: The style of their current kitchen doesn’t feel like home. When you consider how much time we spend preparing meals, entertaining friends, and just walking in and out of the kitchen, who doesn’t want to love their space? So bring on the updated appliances and savvy storage, and don’t leave out the color, details, and features that say “Come spend time with me.” We admit we’re partial, but here at Modern Farmhouse Kitchens, we think one of the best ways to create a welcoming kitchen is to embrace timeworn things. Rustic reclaimed wood. Yes, please! Charming light fixtures that appear salvaged from a centuries-old factory. Where can we…

the kitchen plan CITY IN THE COUNTRY Converted buildings and warehouse spaces are what typically spring to mind when one thinks of loft living, but Craig Kettles brought the same airy look to the 620-square-foot mountain cottage he shares with partner Michael McGaughey in Highlands, North Carolina. In fact, the home, which Craig describes as “a loft in a grove of trees”—along with its shortage of architectural detail—inspired the kitchen’s overhaul. Craig wanted a kitchen with an industrial look that still felt warm and welcoming. EASY ACCESS Floating shelves and a wall of cubbies supply much of the kitchen storage, deliberately putting everyday items in view. “We are both foodies and prefer a working kitchen rather than a show kitchen with lots of closed cabinets,” Craig says. “It’s hard to know what’s…

the kitchen plan BEST-LOVED FEATURE Nostalgic touches abound in interior designer Lindsey Black’s Memphis kitchen, including wide-plank oak floors, schoolhouse-style pendants, and brass accents that reference the early 1900s. But it’s the Shaker-style cabinets painted a bold shade of jade that steal the show. “I’m big on thoughtful use of color for impact,” Lindsey says. “If you begin with a neutral background, you have to bring personality into a space with other elements. By starting with a standout color, everything else falls into place around it.” A white backsplash, countertops, and island cabinetry balance the dark shade. SPACE PLANNING The kitchen was designed to be large enough to handle a crowd when the family entertains (husband Josh has six brothers), but it’s equally efficient (and cozy) for cooking nightly meals for Molly,…

the kitchen plan QUIET ADJUSTMENTS The owner of this 1918 Dutch Colonial home in Atlanta wanted a peaceful, welcoming retreat where she could recharge when cooking. With that in mind, interior designer Carter Kay renovated the kitchen to include a serene color scheme and streamlined cabinet silhouettes while acknowledging the home’s history with classic European-inspired details A FINE BALANCE Plaster walls, glass-front cabinets, and antique oak floors reflect the era of the home, whereas the pared-down design and top-of-the-line appliances embrace a modern sensibility. The stained wood on the island and black accents provide an inviting contrast that balances an abundance of white. CLASSIC SILHOUETTES Cabinet drawers and doors fit flush into the frames for a clean, integrated look. Subtly recessed panels on lower doors, flat-face molding on top of upper cabinetry, and…
