GAME OF THE MONTH Star Wars: Squadrons BEST LAUNCH LINEUP PlayStation Having survived every PlayStation launch, I can honestly say PS5’s launch-day lineup looks like being one of the most interesting. The mix of new, classic, and original games coming day one from Sony studios and indies is shaping into a selection of must-play games. PS5-exclusive Godfall (p56) is looking like a blend of our favourite hack’n’slashers. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (p48) is taking Insomniac’s web-verse in a new and exciting direction. And who’d have thought an 11-year-old game would challenge for our time on a new console? But Bluepoint Games’ Demon’s Souls (p64) remake is just that game; it’s a remarkable achievement. Graphics improvements can only take us so far. PS5 represents a shift in approach. A focus on how we play and not simply…

03 ps4 gets horizon forbidden west

Sneaking out after Sony’s latest bombastic PS5 gameplay reveal was news that some of the next-gen console’s biggest exclusive games will also be released on PS4. As unbelievable as it may sound, games such as Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure will be available on current-gen consoles. This is fantastic news for anyone who looked on as PS5 preorders vanished from retailers faster than Mark Cerny’s commitment to Knack 3. It ensures we can all look forward to playing sequels to two of the defining games of the PS4 generation. “ DIGITAL VERSIONS OF THESE GAMES INCLUDE A FREE UPGRADE.” SWING LOW (EXPECTATION) Naturally, the revelation that we can all head west with Aloy, hopefully in 2021, comes with a caveat. Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony…

06 constructing cyberpunk 2077 street by street

“It’s always [a] fascinating process to decide, okay, what do we do with the source material in this case, right?” says senior level designer Miles Tost. We’re talking about how he and the team at CD Projekt Red have taken the world of the original Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop RPG and turned it into a game world you can explore for yourself. “Because we always want to be respectful to [the source material], right?” Fans of that original will recognise the tabletop’s DNA expressed in the final results. “Our city looks much more organic than the chess-pattern layout that the original had. However, most of the districts that’re there – [like] with the city centre – even look similar in shape [to the original].” Deciding what to expand has been a marriage…

“trophies are great, but it’s time for them to receive some substantial changes on ps5.”

After speaking with a few developers about how trophies work – the Platinum ones, in particular – it’s clear the games missing them are ones in which the developers totally forgot to add them (or just flat-out don’t care). That needs to change when PS5 rolls around. Every game needs a Platinum trophy, no matter how small or large. Beyond that, Sony’s next system has the opportunity to integrate an internal, OS-level trophy tracker, with progress bars so you can see how close you are to earning one. No more guessing! Some trophies become unobtainable after a certain point, mostly due to online servers being shut down. This is the bane of trophy hunters’ existence. One effective solution? Simply add a backup trophy that could kick in once the servers go offline.…

yakuza: like a dragon

“WE ADAPT TO THE NEW STYLE OF COMBAT WITHOUT MISSING A BEAT.” FORMAT PS4, PS5 / ETA 10 NOV (PS4), 2 MAR (PS5) / PUB SEGA / DEV RYU GA GOTOKU STUDIO This might be the first mainline game in the Yakuza series not to star Kazuma Kiryu (it’s titled Yakuza 7 in Japan), but minutes into booting it up our worries swirl away. This is, from the off, Yakuza doing what Yakuza does best. We’re immediately captivated by compelling Japanese crime drama that’s good enough to make some movies blush, swinging between perfectly pitched moments of emotion that make us tear up and goofy, rude comedy that has us laughing out loud. Within five minutes we fall in love with Ichiban Kasuga, a rookie Yakuza, as he’s cussed out by a dodgy…
