editor’s letter

Summertime Vibes RECENTLY, my 6-year-old, Stella, asked if we could walk over to a grassy patch in our Brooklyn neighborhood to blow dandelions. I was in the middle of something or other, but when I looked down at her big brown eyes and took in the simplicity of the request, I couldn’t say no. So out the door we went to gather the biggest, fluffiest dandelions we could find. With no one else around, I pulled down my mask and let out a long single breath with each flower. As I watched the seeds disperse into the warm spring air, I thought about the topsy-turviness of the school year and how my girls had adapted to all the changes (mask wearing, temperature checks, social distancing, sudden closures, remote learning), perhaps even better…

Adam Rodriguez Is Embracing Fatherhood, Dad Jokes and All Known for his roles in Criminal Minds and Magic Mike, the Puerto Rican and Cuban star is most at home playing papi to his three kids. BY DAMARYS OCAÑA PEREZ When Your Wife, Grace, Gave Birth at Home to Your Son, Bridgemont Bernard, Last Year, You Caught Him. What Was That Like? It was the most wonderful moment. With the midwife’s supervision, I literally got to usher him into this world. I honestly felt the same joy and awe at the home births of my daughters, Frankie Elle, 7, and Georgie Daye, 4, whom I didn’t catch. To behold Grace harnessing all her strength to birth our children—that gave me a level of admiration that I didn’t know was possible. How Did You Come up With…

SCHOOL-AGE GET MOVING Kid-friendly cardio, like a game of fetch with the dog, can improve mental health. Researchers in Norway followed nearly 800 6-year-olds and found that those who regularly did exercises that left them a little breathless and sweaty had fewer symptoms of depression at age 8. —SUNNY SEA GOLD PREGNANCY Vitamin D Power Here’s another good reason to choose dairy products daily when you’re pregnant: Getting more foods rich in vitamin D, such as milk and yogurt, may slightly lower your child’s risk of having seasonal allergies, a study in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found. Salmon and eggs are also high in vitamin D. —SUNNY SEA GOLD PRESCHOOLER 200+ The number of words in a kid’s vocabulary by age 3 1,000+ The number of words in a kid’s vocabulary by age 4 SOURCE: AAP BABY How to…

the covid-19 vaccine and kids

Q / How much longer until the vaccine is available for all kids? And why are children last? At press time, three vaccines have been deemed safe and effective against COVID-19 for adults: those developed by Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson, after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the FDA briefly paused the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in April. But making them safe for kids isn’t as simple as lowering the dose. The FDA requires vaccines to be studied in children, because kids’ immune systems are still developing and they might experience side effects that don’t occur in adults. A clinical trial has two parts, says Buddy Creech, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics and director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program. The first finds…

relax and read

AGES 5–6 Visual Tales Newbery Award winner MATT DE LA PEÑA, author of Milo Imagines the World, may love the written word, but he knows full well that nothing brings a story to life quite like images, especially for beginner readers. “We don’t talk enough about the value of following the visual story on the page, but it’s an important part of the journey toward reading text,” says the Mexican American dad of two, whose book picks are full of whimsical details and illustrations: Evelyn Del Rey Is Moving Away by Meg Medina “My 6-year-old daughter left behind her best amiga when we moved cross-country from New York to California. But this coming-of-age story, about a girl whose closest pal moves away, showed her that friendship can transcend distance.” A Song of Frutas by Margarita Engle “I challenge…

a is for adventure

1. Hit the Trails When Jennifer Rios Perretta and her family moved from Chicago to Denver last year, they were lured by Colorado’s rust-colored canyons, golden prairies, and sparkling streams. “We fell in love with the city right away,” Rios Perretta says. Unfortunately, the demands of remote work and schooling often prevented them from fully enjoying the natural beauty right outside their door. Worried that her son, Milan, 4, was feeling cooped up inside their apartment, the Colombian American mom and her husband, who was born in Argentina, came up with a plan to get out of the house. That’s how the family started hiking, initially just along the paths near their home in the city and eventually to longer, more difficult trails in the mountains. While Milan struggled to keep…
