entertaining at home

It’s always a pleasure to be invited to celebrate a special ocassion, and even more so when the celebration is held at a private home. A few month’s back, vivacious couple Small and Philip Laude celebrated their 25th anniversary and housewarming with a sumptuous fête among family and friends at their new house designed by Ed Calma. Catch a glimpse of the party’s lavish floralscapes in our exclusive feature, Love in Bloom (p. 106). Elsewhere on our pages, find lots of inspiration for home entertaining: innovative recipes for crowd pleasers taken from the Western Cape’s colourful Littlegig Festival (p. 134); tips for garden entertaining from Rizzoli’s magnificent coffee table tome, The Art of the Garden (Buy the Book, p. 62); and styling ideas like the crisp Chinoiserie-inspired brunch setting pictured above…

into the district

The Meatpacking District in New York is home to Hermès’ newest flagship store. Taking inspiration from the neighbourhood’s industrial heritage, the landmark building on Ganservoort Street features restored ironwork and a yellow brick façade, as well as sandblasted silver-gray cherry wood walls and furniture in the store itself. The boutique takes up 5,330 square feet over two floors, and has the quintessential ex-libris tile mosaic in toffee browns from the original Hermès store in Paris. At the back of the shop’s first floor is a sweeping staircase animated with carrés, illuminated by natural light. To celebrate the opening, sculptor Ruby Wescoat created show-stopping installations for the boutique’s display windows. www.hermes.com…

art of the matter

Since 1945, Galerie Lelong & Co.—located in Paris and New York—has been representing artists at the forefront of the international art world from every continent and generation, such as Jean Dubuffet, whose 1968 work Table à la Carafe was showcased at this year’s Art Basel, Basel. Also of note at the world’s most anticipated contemporary art fair was the arresting mixed media installation, Projeto Filtro—Para Vergara, by the late Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica. Comprised of several compartments, the large-scale installation allows visitors to immerse themselves in colour (one compartment contains gallons of orange juice). www.galerielelong.com…

designed for living with passion

"Buying or renting an apartment gives a person a place to stay, but filling it with cherished and personally picked interior pieces is when it becomes a place to truly live in," says Kaye Tinga, co-owner of W/17 Home, "we are passionate in helping people turn a blank space into a true home that reflects who they are.
