keep it simple, santa!

Every year I talk about how to make your holiday the happiest it can be, and I know I’m a bit of a broken record, but I truly think the key is to keep it simple. Serve buffets instead of sit-down dinners (see our suggestions on page 104). Mix one great cocktail or punch or cup of good cheer instead of setting up a full bar. And make what you know! If you stick to what you’re good at, whether that’s casseroles, roasts or cookies, you can’t go wrong. In my family, the designated baker is my sister, Maria. (A few years ago I tried to make Christmas cookies and I’ve never been more miserable to be around in my life!) Don’t miss her huge feature on page 96, where she…

glass half-eaten

Cut down on the cleanup after your next party by making sure your guests eat everything—even their cups! Loliware’s edible drinkware, made from agar (a flavorless algae) sweetened with organic cane sugar and tapioca syrup, starts out flexible, like fruit leather, but hardens when filled with cold liquids or desserts. In fun flavors like tart cherry (great for sorbet floats and daiquiris), green tea and vanilla bean, the cups will get munched right up; but if not, toss the uneaten ones in the compost—they’ll break down in the landfill in just 60 days. $16 for four, loliware.com…

appy holidays

PHONE IT IN Giftagram is a top-rated app for its ease of use, its handy features (it sends alerts about holidays) and categories that are especially tricky to buy for—client gifts, every man in your life—and really cool curation (a retro Marshall guitar amp, a pretty poker set, artisanal condiments). Best part: All you need is a mobile number to send your present. The recipient will be notified by text that it’s coming and asked for a shipping address. giftagram.com TEXT APPEAL The folks at Operator, the new venture from a cofounder of Uber, may know your loved ones better than you do. Download the free app and text a description of your gift recipient (a moody tween, perhaps?). An expert, usually a stylist or designer, texts back with ideas (an art print,…
