we got gusto!

For this issue, my consigliere and fellow Italian American Lauren Iannotti and I partnered to pack the power of a special message onto every page. That message: If you want to enjoy your life more, you might try living it more like an Italian. Just like our magazine’s motto—Take a Bite Outta Life!—the word gusto defines who we are because we embrace the idea that there’s joy to be found in living every day in a big, full way. Just changing up the routine of what you eat, or how you communicate with others, or the energy level that you throw into your job or family life can make each day a little more delicious, more thrilling, more fun than the one before it. We may be biased, but we…

smell like a bar

Soap Distillery, a line of cocktail-inspired bath and body products, combines the pleasures of nightcaps and nightly soaks. We’re talking sugar scrubs in scents like limoncello and bourbon and bar soaps in flavors like mint mojito and Negroni. “I love using natural soaps but became bored seeing the same scents over and over,” says founder Danielle Martin. “As I was drinking a cocktail, I thought, What if I make soaps that smell like cocktails? Soap Distillery was born shortly after.” Despite the imitation, the only soaps with actual alcohol in them are the beer varieties, “because it makes the soap feel amazing,” says Martin. “Liquor doesn’t offer much benefit for the skin, and it’s an expensive additive to just wash off of you.” Instead, most of the boozy scents come…

pizza art

Any pizza lover will tell you that a good slice is an art form all its own. The Nameless Network media company is taking that idea to heart by opening the Museum of Pizza in—where else?—New York City. “Pizza is more than a food; it’s a cultural phenomenon,” says CEO Kareem Rahma. “With the Museum of Pizza, we’re combining passion for storytelling and pop culture to fuel discovery, friendship, art, music, and selfies—lots of selfies.” Running from October 13 to 28, “the world’s first and only immersive art experience celebrating pizza” will feature large-scale pizza-themed installations, including an art gallery, a cheese cave, and something called a “pizza beach.” Of course, there will be pizza to eat: Each $35 ticket comes with a cheesy slice to enjoy in between film…

mead business

For those of you who aren’t characters on Game of Thrones, mead is a fermented honey liquor that dates all the way back to 8000 B.C. Now a new crop of producers are rediscovering the ancient hooch and putting their own spin on it. “What’s so great about mead is that it can be incredibly versatile in flavor, from basic honey to more complex infusions,” says Dylan Sprouse, cofounder of All-Wise Meadery (allwisemeadery.com) in Brooklyn (and a former child star best known for The Suite Life of Zack & Cody). Over the past decade, the number of meaderies in the U.S. has grown from around 30 to more than 500. Other notable additions to the explosive movement include Bløm Meadworks (drinkblom.com) in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Paisley Meadery (paisleymeadery.com) in…
