skipper’s view

I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH to make a trip to Slovenia this month to test the new Elan 45.1. July in Slovenia in the midst of one of the most savage heatwaves was quite an eye opener and the only place to be by midday was out on the water. It was also very interesting to sail the new Elan - not least because she is a development of the Elan 444 which I worked on back in the hazy days of 2014. The contrast between the old and the new boat was fascinating and made you realise how much work goes into refining and improving these yachts as they are developed. Working on a boat day in, day out gives you a familiarity with a yacht that is strangely intimate; you…

jubilee sailing trust saved after raising £1m in a week

A startlingly successful emergency appeal that raised more than £1m in a week means the Jubilee Sailing Trust will continue to operate in spite of financial woes that had threatened the charity’s existence. However, the trustees of the charity offering sailing opportunities to the disadvantaged and disabled, have recognised their financial straits have raised questions about the viability of the JST’s operating strategy – and that things must change to avoid a similar predicament in future. James Crill, chairman of the trustees, described the appeal response as “‘very moving”. “We now need to sustain the momentum created by the success of the Emergency Appeal and work hard to secure the strongest possible future for our mission,” he said. “It is clear that we cannot continue as we are, and need to make some…

rya throws weight behind disability inclusion campaign

A national disability inclusion campaign highlighting the benefits of sport for all participants has been welcomed by the RYA. The Activity Alliance’s Who Says? campaign aims to change negative perceptions about disability, inclusion and sport. The findings of its research show a general lack of awareness, inexperience and unfamiliarity with disabled people although there is good awareness that sport should be for everyone. However, non-disabled people were concerned about the negative impact taking part together may have on the wellbeing of disabled people. The top three concerns were that they may patronise disabled people (53%), disabled people may get hurt (47%) or that they may say something inappropriate (37%). The RYA's Jackie Reid said: “The research shows that certain perceptions around disability in sport should be challenged and it is…

record circumnavigation of mainland britain completed in a wayfarer dinghy

Two intrepid UK sailors have achieved a world first by successfully circumnavigating the coastline of mainland Britain non-stop and unassisted in an open sailing dinghy. They completed the epic voyage in just 15 days 4hrs sailing a recently lovingly refurbished 60 year old, 16ft long open Wayfarer sailing dinghy named Nipegegi. Will Hodshon (42) and Rich Mitchell (44) set sail from Salcombe, Devon on 15 June and completed the 1390 nautical mile journey on 1 July, returning safe but tired in a boat owned owned from new by the Hodshon family. With the back-up of the Nipegegi Round Britain (NRB) team, Will and Rich overcame challenging sailing conditions through open sea passages. The effort raised £10,000 in donations which will be split between the RNLI and Surfers Against Sewage. “The beauty of the…
