Ming Ho-Tang, recipient of the Most Stylish Woman award at the 2018 Hong Kong Tatler Ball, was photographed at Macau’s Morpheus hotel for the cover story. In the feature, she discusses everything from fashion tips to her philanthropic work. Lucy Torres-Gomez, honoured as Philippine Tatler’s Most Stylish Woman last year, is on the cover. A former television personality, Torres-Gomez now serves as a congresswoman for the fourth district of the province of Leyte, where she was born. Celebrated authors Hao Jingfang and Wang Zhanhei share the cover this issue. Both have recently picked up major awards, with Hao winning the prestigious Hugo Award and Wang taking home the Blancpain-Imaginist Literary Prize. Lawyers-turned-entrepreneurs Lea Chan and Seth Yap grace the cover and reveal their plans for M101, their real estate development company, which is…

life with passion

EBRUARY IS TYPICALLY SEEN as the month of love and romance with many couples celebrating Valentine’s Day. But in this issue, we go against conventions and explore the theme of passion—more about enthusiasm, less about romance. “Passion is one great force that unleashes creativity, because if you’re passionate about something, then you’re more willing to take risks,” renowned American cellist Yo-Yo Ma once said to Philip Ball, the author of The Music Instinct: How Music Works and Why We Can’t Do Without It. I can’t help but agree. Many successful people that I’ve met as a journalist are tours de force, not just because they are brilliant or intelligent, but also because they are fuelled by passion, this magical energy that drives them even in the face of setbacks. Simply put, they love…

ASK CHEF-RESTAURATEUR Beppe De Vito how he would describe his passion, and he immediately has an answer. “My passion is to make people happy—be it my wife or my customers,” he says. “As nice as it sounds, it’s actually a selfish thought. If they’re happy, I’m happy as well; it’s actually a simple, lazy path to being happy.” As good a sound bite this is, it doesn’t quite tell the whole story. A self-taught chef, Beppe’s passion for what he puts on his restaurants’ menus is obvious when he starts to talk about food. He is well known for his pasta with sea urchin, which was inspired by a childhood spent diving for this delicacy in Italy. “Where I come from, we eat them raw. So when you find them, you…

WHETHER YOU ARE MUSICALLY INCLINED or simply appreciate great music, the Le Silex piano by UK-based Edelweiss Pianos will surely strike a chord with you for it is the epitome of artistry genius. Inspired by the texture of flint—a hard grey rock form of quartz—the piano has been meticulously crafted to look like it had survived a lightning strike, gaining waves of mineral deposits or glossy stone. Hand-sculpted from a life-sized clay render, its resulting deconstructed form resembles a piece of art more than a conventional musical instrument. Only seven Le Silex pianos will ever be produced, each taking a team of 15 designers and artisans six months to craft. And to make each piece even more unique, owners can choose the exact undulation of the piano, while finer details such…

SIXTY-THREE OF THE TOP women golfers in the world will vie for the US$1.5m prize purse at the 2019 HSBC Women’s World Championship. Held from February 28 to March 3, the four-day event at Sentosa Golf Club’s New Tanjong Course will see reigning champion Michelle Wie resist the challenge from the likes of Thai sisters Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn as well as American sisters Nelly and Jessica Korda (pictured right), who have all confirmed their attendance. Wie’s biggest challenge would probably come from the 23-year-old Ariya (above), who was named the 2018 LPGA Rolex Player of the Year, having reclaimed the top spot in women’s golf last year, after producing consistently dazzling performances on the green. hsbcgolf.com/womens 05 The number of hours one control-freak couple sat in front of their CCTV…

Polo and music collide at the inaugural edition of Singapore Urban Polo on February 28. Set against the backdrop of Marina Bay Sands at the open space at Bayfront Avenue, the event offers an adrenaline-filled day in the heart of the city. But instead of traditional polo, a more fast-paced contemporary style will be played in a significantly smaller playing field, with three 30min games of four chukkas, each lasting 7min. Four teams of three players, many of them professionals from Australia and New Zealand, will play in the tournament, before an exciting music DJ line-up, including Tough Love from the UK, wraps up the night with a bang. urbanpolo.com.sg…
