Entrepreneur, influencer and philanthropist Laurinda Ho, daughter of casino king Stanley Ho, appears on the cover of Hong Kong Tatler’s October issue and discusses her plans for her charity, Smile With Us HK. Elsewhere, we profile Korean actress Song Hye Kyo and photographer Xyza Cruz Bacani. On the cover are Melissa Tan and Melissa Sin, who are playing integral roles in carrying their respective family businesses into 2020 and beyond. Plus, we speak to three generations of the family behind tea brand BOH, who discuss their 90 years of history producing tea for Malaysia. Fronting Philippine Tatler’s Legacy Issue is actress, television personality and entrepreneur Anne Curtis, who reveals what’s next on her agenda. Also featured are the Tesoro, Aranaz and Dizon families—three design dynasties whose leading members are all preparing to…

a study in savoir faire

“Without craftsmanship, inspiration is a mere reed shaken in the wind,” virtuoso musician and composer Johannes Brahms once said. Without craftsmanship, I say it would be impossible to talk about the luxury industry at all, so it is no surprise that this is a topic we often touch upon at Singapore Tatler. We can’t help it—being surrounded by people and pieces that represent the pinnacle of creativity means that our stories inevitably revolve around the art of making. Every luxury brand relies on artisans and their know-how to bring imaginative designs to life. Although the use of the word “craft” has been somewhat co-opted today—similar to the way “curate” is used to describe activities as simple as stocking a bookshelf—we are proud that in our own little way, we nurture a…

in pursuit of wanderlust

Anyone who goes on a Singapore Tatler work trip would tell you that while it is an exhilarating experience, there’s an invisible undercurrent of stress that would manifest itself every so often. Sleep? There’s hardly a chance for that. Food? Forget sticking to your keto diet, especially when you’re offered an amazing spread of local delicacies. Even when faced with erratic weather and a vintage car that failed on us after 5min of driving it, our first-ever trip to Prague was simply unforgettable—and in a good way. We travelled to the majestic capital of the Czech Republic with society couple, Jeffrey and Emily Piak, for Louis Vuitton’s High Jewelry presentation, the first collection by its artistic director for jewellery and watches, Francesca Amfitheatrof. And on the side, we allocated time to…

What does the world’s most expensive hotel room look like? Located at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, the Empathy Suite, which is perched 34 floors above the Vegas Strip, is designed by world-renowned British contemporary artist Damien Hirst and overlooks the American city’s famous boulevard. The residential masterpiece is reserved exclusively for million-dollar casino rollers for a minimum of two nights at a princely sum of US$200,000. From bespoke indoor furniture to wall decals sporting the iconic butterfly motif from Hirst’s debut exhibition in London in 1991, the hotel room is home to six of the artist’s signature installations, each showcasing his eclectic exploration of death as a central theme. One of which is Winner/Loser, a white tank with two suspended bull sharks. An installation from his most prominent…

To debunk notions of disability in society and to encourage the confidence, independence and self-esteem of its special needs members, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) of Singapore held its inaugural expedition to ascend Mount Fuji in August. Called the YMCA Inclusive Climb, 10 exceptional individuals scaled the mountain—reaching 500m away from the summit—and overcame their individual adversities while achieving a milestone that once seemed impossible. On December 2, the YMCA will host its annual Giving Gala at Parkroyal on Pickering to raise funds to support its special needs programmes, including the Mount Fuji expedition next year. OPEN CALL On November 28, local theatre company Pangdemonium will host its PangsGiving fundraiser, where guests can look forward to sumptuous meals at one of the 30 select restaurants in Singapore. They can also…

SNEAK PREVIEW A pair of society best friends recently gatecrashed the members-only VIP area of a party to get a photo with that evening’s celebrity performer. They used an acquaintance and his big group of friends as a cover while they quickly slipped in before the poor registration executives could realise what was going on. SMART TRAVEL Rumour has it that a certain jet-setter schmoozes with hoteliers to snag a free stay whenever she visits their hotels overseas. We also hear she refuses to visit the same destination twice, which might explain why her relationships with each of the men never lasted more than a season.…
