In what feels like a blink of an eye, here we are: at the beginning of a brand-new decade. There’s nothing like a fresh start to inspire hope—a transition that poet and publisher T S Eliot put so eloquently when he said, “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language. And next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.” The top of each year is a chance to start anew and like me, I’m sure many of you have written down goals and resolutions to kick-start 2020 in the right direction. However, in our quest to improve our lives and achieve that next milestone, we must not forget how important balance is in the equation. Striking a balance is something that our cover…

personal journey

Talk about an exclusive first look—the very first person to lay eyes on the photographs we captured for this month’s cover shoot with fitness entrepreneur Liv Lo was none other than her husband, Henry Golding. The Crazy Rich Asians star called in to say hello to his wife as we were in between set-ups while on location at Upper Peirce Reservoir Park. Liv gave him a glimpse of the photos by holding her phone up to our photographer’s laptop screen, excited to share the results of the morning’s labour. Liv is the brains behind FitSphere, a website where she teaches her subscribers a unique blend of yoga and high-intensity interval training through videos. On the growing business of wellness, she commented: “There are all these health crazes and I have no…

Often, it is the most unexpected collaborations that result in great design. Case in point: the Ako chair by renowned British-Israeli industrial designer Ron Arad and London-based interiors and lifestyle brand Oka. Word has it that Arad was attracted to the “elegant yet beautiful simplicity” of Oka’s Washakie chair, which was a commercial success. Pair the original with Arad’s 1989 Chair by its Cover project—a wooden seat encased within a concave mirror—and the Ako was born. Arad wrapped the Washakie chair in two separate sheets of copper and stainless steel. The first layer of malleable steel was rolled inwards to complement the curvature of the chair and the second copper layer was tacked onto the first. The chair’s upholstery had been updated in hot pink or burnt orange, while juxtaposing words such…

It is safe to say that Singapore’s literary scene has been on a steady rise in the past decade. As global audiences grow more curious about literature from Southeast Asia, homegrown authors such as Balli Kaur Jaswal and Rachel Heng have been gaining accolades and making waves on international platforms, casting a notable spotlight on the country’s literary talents. To acknowledge the efforts of excellent writers, independent publisher Epigram Books will host the Epigram Books Fiction Prize Gala on January 16 at the Conrad Centennial Singapore. The winning manuscript from four shortlisted English-language novels will be announced that evening, with the finalists hailing from the wider Southeast Asian region—a first since the prize debuted four years ago. WINNING PUTT Olympic medallists Justin Rose (pictured), Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar are among…

HUNGER PANGS It was an embarrassing evening for a presumptuous entrepreneur, who hosted guests at his new bungalow for dinner but failed to cater to their dietary needs. The vegans in the group left with stomachs still rumbling, as there was no main course option for them. SECRET RENDEZVOUS An outdoor charity fundraiser turned out to be the best place for a group of businessmen to flaunt their mistresses. Naturally, they declined any phototaking for fear of their wives finding out about their not-so-secret affairs.…
