oh, the places you’ll go

They say that travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer. I believe it’s also one of the few investments that make you smarter. Whether it’s the history of neoclassical architecture or the intricacies of natural winemaking, a first-hand experience is certainly the most enjoyable—and effective—way to learn. The enriching aspect of travel strongly resonates with Singapore-based entrepreneurs Francesco and Birgit Galli Zugaro, the couple behind Aqua Expeditions, who are on our cover this month. Perpetual itinerants, they founded the luxury boutique cruise brand to help travellers experience the world in an authentic, comfortable and sustainable manner. For the cover story on page 120, we shot them aboard their newest vessel Aqua Blu as they share their journey in life and business. In this issue, Tatler Asia editors and…

all aboard

For this month’s cover shoot, the Singapore Tatler crew made our way to Bali, Indonesia to meet with Francesco and Birgit Galli Zugaro, the couple behind boutique luxury cruise company Aqua Expeditions. The air was balmy as we made our way through a local port, where we boarded a tender that took us to Aqua Blu, the company’s newest vessel. On board, we showed the couple all the outfits we had prepared for them. Francesco was open to the idea of moving away from the somewhat cliched linen look for a simple but sharp burgundy turtleneck sweater paired with board shorts. And because style is always an amalgamation of different ideas, he decided to pick his own accessories. We are guessing Francesco’s delight with his new look encouraged Birgit to step out…

On the tranquil waters of the Lule River, amid the untouched terrain of the Swedish Lapland, sits the Arctic Bath, the world’s first floating spa, which promises a one-of-a-kind wellness experience for discerning travellers. Designed by Swedish architects Bertil Harström and Johan Kauppi—the same creative minds behind Treehotel, the remarkable nearby accommodation where guests stay among tall pine trees—the Arctic Bath is built in two parts: the hotel and the spa. The former consists of 12 rooms, six of which are built on the tree-lined shore and the remaining float near the water’s edge, while the latter includes an outdoor cold bath that is situated in the centre of the floating structure, where guests can plunge into the icy waters. Four saunas, a hot bath, and indoor and outdoor showers are…

line of sight

When he was just 28 weeks old, Le Dinh Thinh was diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity, an eye disease that affects prematurely born babies and can lead to severe loss of sight or permanent blindness. However, thanks to the medical support of non-profit humanitarian organisation Orbis International, the now 8-year-old Vietnamese child was successfully treated. Thinh, together with his ophthalmologist, Dr Duong Anh Quan, will be in Singapore on February 12 for the annual Orbis Singapore Charity Gala, held at the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore, to share his story and inspire more people to contribute to Orbis’ fundraising efforts. For the past 38 years, Orbis has worked relentlessly to eliminate avoidable blindness in developing countries and empower local community doctors with the ability to detect and treat eye conditions. All proceeds raised from…

DOUBLE TROUBLE This newbie to high society was recently spotted at a charity gala handing out samples of her latest make-up products. Her banker husband was similarly lacking in social graces, annoying their tablemates all night by name-dropping the politicians he knew “like family”. Now, that’s two names struck off future guest lists! SMOKE & MIRRORS Unhappy with the photo her go-to jeweller posted of her on its Instagram account, this VIP client insisted that the post be deleted and replaced with a selfie she took wearing her new necklace—never mind she had clearly (and poorly) given herself a digital nip and tuck.…
