This is home, truly... the strains to the Kit Chan song play in my head as I write this opening note to our August issue. It’s undoubtedly my favourite NDP tune, but I have to say that this year’s mash-up, “Our Singapore”, starring so many familiar faces, warms my heart too. When it comes to celebrating our nation’s birthday, The Singapore Women’s Weekly unabashedly goes all out to say “We Love SG”! For our cover, Singapore icon Fann Wong is dressed head to toe in homegrown labels, and as you flip through the pages, you’ll see celebs and beauty and fashion brands doing us proud. But what makes this issue so special are the women in it. You’ll meet the first nine nominees of this year’s Great Women Of Our Time Awards…

Louis Soliano This jazz musician was awarded the Cultural Medallion in 2018. His storied career since the 1960s has seen him perform with many world renowned artistes, including legendary jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong. Joi Chua Local songstress Joi has been pretty quiet on the career-front lately but she’s poised for a comeback after making an appearance in this year’s NDP song. Jordin Tan One of the youngest performers in this year’s NDP video, 11-year-old Jordin gained fame through her YouTube channel where…

We feel a certain sense of pride when we see homegrown labels making waves overseas, so imagine our excitement when Michelle Obama wore a pair of earrings from Singaporean jewellers State Property. The ex-FLOTUS is just one of the growing band of celebs who are taking notice of Singaporean fashion brands. Here are some other labels who are proudly flying the “Made in Singapore” flag. CHARLES & KEITH Charles & Keith needs no introduction – after all, they’re one of the most enduring footwear brands in the local market – but it seems like Singaporeans aren’t the only ones who are in love with the label’s trendy and affordable shoes. Celebs like Priyanka Chopra and Gigi Hadid have all worn Charles & Keith shoes, making it one of the more affordable celebrity-endorsed…

Fann Wong is a true-blue Singapore girl. As she tucks into a breakfast of nasi lemak and teh O, she tells me she’s just got back from a family trip a few days earlier and despite all the fun she had with her hubby, Christopher Lee, and their four-year-old son, Zed, she’s so glad to be home. I’m proud to be Singaporean… home is always the best place to be “Because of my work, I always travel outside of the country and I realise how lucky I am to be Singaporean. I feel that people always treat me a little bit nicer when they find out I’m Singaporean,” she explains. “For Singapore to have such an effect on other people from other countries makes me feel proud. I never thought that things would…

While Fann says asking an actor to choose their favourite role is difficult because they try to put their 100 per cent into every character, she ultimately obliged us with five of her best: ♥ Return Of The Condor Heroes, 1998 Playing the female lead in this hit wuxia drama, Fann starred opposite Christopher Lee for the second time in two years after appearing together on Brave New World in 1996. At the time, she was in a long-term relationship with a businessman. ♥ Looking For Stars, 2000 Fann rejoins Chris on-screen for this drama that featured the pair as star-crossed lovers who have to cope with the aftermath of their one-night stand in Tokyo. While sparks flew on screen, the two were still not an item; but Fann had broken up with her…
