awards season

As the melancholy strains of Auld Lang Syne herald the end of another trip around the sun, we’re not just another year older – we’ve also reached the end of a decade. Music listening and music making have been transformed and reshaped by technology in recent years, and it’s something I reflect on in greater depth in our Gear Of The Decade cover feature, which begins on p20 and charts a 10 year period during which digital technology for guitarists has come of age and delivered on many of its original promises. Modelling tech isn’t a compromise or a guilty pleasure any more – it features in the backline and on the pedalboards of some of the world’s biggest artists and provides almost limitless scope for experimentation for even the…

Join the conversation Email us at editors@guitar.com THE MILLIMETRIC SYSTEM Hi guys, just finished up reading the Future Sounds issue [GM375] and I had to write to you about the some of the wonderfully unconventional guitars you reviewed in the issue – particularly the Millimetric MGS2. I’ll admit that when it comes to guitars I’ve always had a soft spot for unconventionally-shaped instruments (I was delighted to see that Fender Japan has recently reissued the positively bonkers Swinger!), but even by those standards, the Millimetric is a bit out there… the first time I saw it, I actually laughed at how out-there it is as a design. But the more I looked at the pictures of it [see above], the more I started to really love it! Guitar design is so often a…

ones to watch mermaidens

Look Me In The Eye is the third album from acclaimed Wellington-based band Mermaidens. Drawing on the influences of Warpaint, PJ Harvey and a multitude of riff-orientated rock bands, guitarist Gussie Larkin (above right) and her bandmates Lily West (left) and Abe Hollingsworth (centre) have pushed their sonic limits, producing a vibrant and exploratory new LP. The viewpoints of both singers and frontwomen help frame the new album, allowing them to create a dialogue on both female collaboration and friendship. Gussie’s tireless work ethic and love for the guitar is apparent throughout the record, which she attributes to “not being very good at relaxing and sitting around.” Noted for using a vintage Tokai Hummingbird among other off-kilter six-strings, here she tells us why a Stratocaster copy first kick-started her love of guitars,…

album spotlight bodega shiny new model

Brooklyn’s Bodega are a playful yet deadpan group of musicians and creatives. The collective push the boundaries of modern rock with their repertoire of art-infused guitar music, driven by their own brand of pretension and razor-sharp wit. Formed in 2016 following the demise of previous outfit Bodega Bay, the art-rock fivesome have now released new extended EP Shiny New Model to follow 2018’s debut LP, Endless Scroll. Guitarist/producer Madison Velding-VanDam (far right, above) started as bassist, but is now lead player and main producer. “I’m no loyalist to guitar, though,” he says. “While living in Berlin I put the guitar away to work with synthesisers and sequencers.” He insists he only uses Reverend guitars – “primarily the discontinued Warhawk II HB, because it’s the most versatile, full-sounding guitar I’ve ever played and…
