editorial@cmca.net.au You can’t imagine how pleased I was to break free from Melbourne’s last COVID-19-related lockdown. It came just in time to get away from my government-imposed cocoon over the Melbourne Cup long weekend. But rather than sticking around to watch the nags enrich their blue-blooded owners while us mug punters forked out our hard-earned cash on dubious tips from in-the-know ‘connections,’ I headed off to Anglesea to swim, surf, and ride my mountain bike. While I was there, I managed to swing an axe and clean up the mess that our stack of firewood had become after months of neglect. Of course, I didn’t do my ailing back any favours, but I also didn’t care, for I was outside again, breathing in the fresh sea air rather than feeling imprisoned by…

welcome

Hopefully we will continue to return to the new normal as restrictions ease and borders open — though at the time of writing, the Omicron variant was a threat to family and friends catching up over Christmas and making travel plans was a little dicey again. But with our fingers crossed, you may like to look forward to one or more upcoming events this year: • Tasmanian State Rally: Campbell Town Tas, 24 to 28 February • Cohuna Solos Rally: Cohuna Vic, 28 February to 7 March • WA West Coast Rally: Westonia WA, 30 March to 4 April • Solos Northern Territory Rally: Gemtree Caravan Park NT, 15 to 20 May • Dam Fine Rally: Townsville Qld, 30 June to 4 July • Christmas in July: Mareeba Qld, 21 to 25 July • Solos Western Australia Rally:…

richardbarwick@cmca.net.au HAPPY NEW YEAR! The staff at NHQ would like to wish you all a happy and prosperous 2022. I would like to thank all members who kindly sent in Christmas cards and season’s greetings; your best wishes are very much appreciated. 35TH NATIONAL RALLY The 35th National Rally will be held at the Bingara Showground in Bingara, NSW from 16 to 23 October 2022. Rally Manager Jo Tremain finalised 80% of the planning prior to postponing the event last July. Jo will be re-engaging with many of the suppliers, entertainers, and exhibitors to have everything ready to roll for October 2022. One thing with which we require member assistance is in relation to volunteers. Due to the postponement, some members may now be able to attend, while some may no longer be able to…

the new year can’t begin soon enough!

On New Year’s Eve, many celebrated the last moments of 2020 counting in the new year. As the clock struck midnight, those of us still awake with great joy wished each other “Happy New Year!” Why does the new year fall on 1 January? In 45 B.C., New Year’s Day was celebrated on 1 January for the first time when Julius Caesar’s Julian calendar took effect. Today’s Gregorian calendar introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII corrected some slight inaccuracies, and also set the new year as 1 January. Not all cultures follow the Gregorian calendar. For example: the Chinese New Year starts later in January or early February. The Jewish New Year (based on a lunar calendar) is called Rosh Hashanah and usually takes place in September. The Islamic New…

expedia group to end support for captive whale and dolphin performances

Global online travel company Expedia Group has decided to end its support for whale and dolphin interactions and circus-style performances by prohibiting the sale of these experiences on their website. This comes after the World Animal Protection group campaigned for over a year, with over 350,000 supporters coming together to condemn the practices. Ben Pearson, Interim Country Director for World Animal Protection Australia said, “This is a huge step towards our goal of ending dolphin and whale cruelty. We want this to be the last generation of whales and dolphins suffering in captivity for entertainment. For too long, dolphins, whales and other cetaceans have been forced to perform and live for 50 years in small barren tanks.” Expedia Group’s updated animal welfare policy can be viewed on their website at expedia.com/lp/b/wildlife.…

rv owners reminded to check for deadly recalled water heaters

The ACCC is urging caravan and motorhome owners to check their rig for Suburban-branded water heaters. According to the government body, “More than 50 per cent of these units might emit deadly odourless carbon monoxide if used in gas mode. Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause death, and short-term exposure can cause serious long-term injuries.” Consumers can check if their heater is affected by opening the exterior access door to the hot water service and checking the model and serial number located on the right-hand side. They should then enter the serial number on the Coast to Coast RV website at coastrv.com.au/suburbanrecall to ensure that theirs is safe. Part of the reason for the ACCC’s concern is that, by the end of October 2021, over 8000 consumers still hadn’t registered their water…
